City stroll to victory at the CBS Arena...

28 March 2023

The Sky Blues Under-21s made it back-to-back wins with victory over Colchester United at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Goals from Trialist, Justin Obikwu and Danny Cashman saw City take the game away from the U’s in the Professional Development League.

The visitors did pull one back late on, but it would prove to be nothing more than a consolation, as City climb to 6th in the PDL North.

It was the visitors who had the first attempt on goal, as Kaan Benney produced a strike from distance, which Daniel Rachel had to be on his toes to tip over the bar to deny the midfielder.

The City shot-stopper was called into action again ten minutes later, flinging himself to his left to deny Ryan Lowe’s strike from distance.

For all the visitors’ chances, it was the Sky Blues who would take the lead when Evan Eghosa’s ball back across goal was met by the Trialist and he slotted the ball past Chamberlain on the edge of the area.

City were looking to build on their lead and went close to doubling their advantage when Justin Obikwu picked out Harrison Nee in the box, but his effort fell into the side netting.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-0 Colchester United

Minutes after the restart, City doubled their lead and it was Obikwu who found himself in space in the area and calmly found the back of the net.

At the other end, Colchester were looking for a way back in and a header at the back post from Gene Kennedy had Rachel back-peddling, as he produced a fine stop to deny the U’s captain.

However, Colchester would be left to rue their missed chance as City would go straight up the other end and add a third, with Danny Cashman tapping home Obikwu’s ball across goal.

And Cashman almost produced the spectacular in search of a fourth. The attacker intercepted a loose pass and attempted to beat the ‘keeper from the halfway line, but his effort came back off the crossbar.

The visitors did pull one back late on through Kaan Benney, but they were unable to build on it in the final few minutes, as City ran-out winners.
