INTERVIEW: Mark Robins looks back at Shrewsbury result and provides injury updates

22 July 2023

Mark Robins provided an update on the fitness of Jamie Allen and Jay Dasilva in his post-match reaction at Shrewsbury Town.

The Sky Blues were held to a 1-1 draw at Croud Meadow, with Kasey Palmer equalising after Ryan Bowman had put the Shrews in front.

City were able to welcome back Gustavo Hamer into the starting eleven, as he continues his recovery from injury.

Robins also gave his assessment of the performance in the 1-1 draw, as City continued their pre-season preparations.

On the Shrewsbury result…

“No injuries. I’m happy with that. In terms of our play, we worked really hard yesterday so we were always going to function this way, we’re not the finished article we’re still trying to get players in and we’re working round the clock on that.

“The work they’ve done has been first class as usual, but it has an impact and it was slow first half an it was a laboured build up.

“They played in a block, and it made it difficult to play through them and we needed to be better, and we will be eventually because we will have round holes in round pegs.

“We need more speed and we’re demanding that from them, and we need to work in a different way with the players we’ve got and the players that are coming in.”

Gustavo Hamer…

“Gus got half a game and he hasn’t really trained yet so you can see he isn’t in shape yet because he hasn’t played since the play off final, but he’s working for his fitness which is good.”

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto…

“Tatsu looked tired. He’s come across from Belgium and he needs some time to adjust and was really good the other day, but it was a step up in class today and he struggled a little.

“That wasn’t unexpected, he’s looked tired for a day or so and he has another half oof football in his legs which is good for him.”

The Under-21s in the group…

“We have some talented boys and we’re getting a first look at them in our group because they’re based at the Higgs and you don’t get to see them too much.

“It’s been a really useful exercise and some of them will stay around, I said at the start of pre-season they were here to help us and also, we said one or two of them might pop up and might be closer than they think and I think that’s happening.

“One or two of the younger players are showing really promising signs and I’m pleased for them.”

Update on Jamie Allen…

“Jamie was in hospital, and he has had an issue with his heart. He was in hospital, and he had a funny turn, and he has all the investigations done and he is fine now he can resume.

“He had pericarditis, inflammation round the heart, and that had to settle down and it has, but he has to take things steady now.

“On the back of this, everyone in the building has had a cardiac screening and hopefully we get a clean bill of health.”

Jay Dasilva absence…

“Jay picked up an ankle issue and he has a sprain, it’s in the inside of his ankle and he may miss Tuesday but he should be okay for Saturday.”
