ACADEMY: Under-18s continue unbeaten start to season through injury time equaliser

29 August 2023

Gary Mills was delighted with the togetherness of his group, as the Under-18s came from behind to draw 3-3 with Cardiff City.

City fell 3-1 down with ten minutes to go before pulling one back and then equalizing through Goalkeeper Luis Lines in the 96th minute.

Lines came up for a corner with seconds remaining and headed home the leveller, sending the 18s into jubilation as they continued their unbeaten start to the season.

Disappointment with the start to the game…

“I wasn’t happy with the way we started. We were too relaxed with our play and didn’t get going in the first half at all really.

“The goals we conceded were far too easy and we didn’t make Cardiff work for them at all and we were disappointed from a defensive view of all the goals they scored to be honest.”

The togetherness of the group…

“The goal ten minutes from time gave the boys some belief.

“One thing I will say about this group is that they never know when they’re beaten, and they never give up.

“They showed real resilience and a real togetherness, and it was proof of that when they produced an ending that they should be proud of.

“The attitude to want to do well and sticking together is next to none.

“We knew at the start of the season that there were going to be tough moments and we were going to be up against it with our back against the wall.

“To show that resilience and togetherness that early on in the season just bodes well for us going forward.”

Luis Lines scoring in injury time…

“It was a funny one really. We get a corner with a few seconds to go and then Rylie Siddall produces a great delivery and Luis has managed to get himself on the end of it.

“With him going away with Wales Under-17s earlier this week and getting two appearances under his belt and then scoring a 96th minute winner, it’s been a special week for him.

Ive seen most moments in football and to be honest it was a really good header and he put it into the far corner and peeled off to celebrate and all the lads joined in, and it was a great moment.

Reaction after the game…

“The lads were very jubilant after the game, but we had to remind them about the performance and where we need to improve because it’s about development and that’s what we’re here for.

“We had to remind them of where we can be better and what we did well, but ultimately it was good to get a point.”
