15 March 2019

Ahead of Saturday's latest installment, we take a look back at three classic matches between Coventry City and Peterborough United...

3rd January 2004 - FA Cup: 2-1

In the third round of the 2003/04 FA Cup, the Sky Blues faced Peterborough at Highfield Road. Coventry went into the game as favourites being the league above in the 2003/04 season. Despite this Peterborough went close first when Richard Logan hit the post on the 11th minute. After a few close chances by the Sky Blues, the highlight of the half came from Tom Williams when a 30-yard volley forced a great save out of Gavin Ward. The two teams went into the break goalless.

Going into the second half Coventry showed their quality and in the 59th minute the deadlock was broken thanks to Gary McSheffery. Two minutes later the lead was then doubled by Julian Joachim, giving Coventry full control of the game. Even though Peterborough had an uphill battle, it was made in tougher when Sagi Burton-Godwin received his second yellow and put the Posh down to ten men. A consolation goal was scored in the 79th minute by Andy Clarke, but the Sky Blues managed the game to go through to the fourth round.

26th December 2013 - League One: 4-2

In 2013 the Sky Blues faced Peterborough on Boxing Day at Sixfields. The Posh took the lead in the game when Shaun Jeffers found the back of the net in the 21st minute. Leon Clarke found the equaliser in the 45th minute, but Peterborough took the lead for the second time instantly when Lee Tomlin put it past Joe Murphy.

Just after the break Leon Clarke found his second of the game and brought the Sky Blues level once again. After a quieter period, on the 80th minute Coventry took the lead for the first time in the game, as Franck Moussa scored the Sky Blues third. Controversy came in the last minute when Posh defender Shaun Brisley thought he had earnt the away side a point, but the referee deemed the ball hadn’t crossed the line, the Sky Blues striker Callum Wilson went up the other end to put the game to bed with Coventry’s fourth of the game.

31st October 2015 - League One: 3-2

The Sky Blues went into the fixture with Peterborough unbeaten at home in the 2015/16 season. The record looked like it was going to come to an end when the Posh struck first on the 15th minute when Jermaine Anderson put the first past Reice Charles-Cook. Thirteen minutes later Peterborough looked in full control as Erhun Oztumer doubled the lead from 25 yards out. Consequently, giving Peterborough at 2-0 lead at half time.

The Sky Blues came out second half determined to keep hold of their record and found a way back into the game through Roman Vincelot on the 56th minute. The comeback was then complete on the 80th minute when Adam Armstrong looked to give each team a point, however he had different plans and on the 87th minute Armstrong grabbed a brace and put the Sky Blues into the lead, giving Coventry all three points and maintaining their great start to the season at home.
