Coventry City Ladies face wait as they bid for a place in the new Women's Super League
COVENTRY City Ladies are playing the waiting game after successfully submitting their bid to become a member of the prestigious Women's Super League (WSL).The FA opened the application process for all women’s football clubs to apply to enter the league from 2014 onwards.
And over the past three months under the stewardship of former manager Paul Cudby, the club have been working hard on their bid which was received by the FA this week.
Now chairman Bill Newnes and his team face nervous wait to find out if they have been successful in June.
"This is one of the biggest challenges we have faced as a club and everyone involved is hoping the FA will favour us with one of the licences," said Mr Newnes.
"Our bid was submitted on time and now we wait for the final decision on who has secured the licensees for the WSL.
"We still have work to do as we might be interviewed by the FA regarding aspects of the bid and how we intent to work within the local community.
"Being in the WSL will bring TV and Radio coverage and raise the profile of the club not only within the local area but nationally too."
In total 33 applications were made from a variety of clubs ranging from local rivals Aston Villa to current Premier League leaders Sunderland.
The FA is looking to launch a second division for the WSL, which means up to 20 clubs will be selected to participate instead of the current eight.
Newnes added: "Since I took over as Chairman I could see that the FA was looking at trying to promote women’s football in this country.
"I could see that as a club we needed to be prepared for any changes and have worked with the board to make sure we were ready for the changes the FA would propose.
“The main focus for us was to maintain our position in the top flight of women’s football, then to make sure we secure corporate sponsorship.
"We have been delighted with the responses from everyone we talked to and have secured a number of partnership deals along the way.
"This has all gone to bolster our bid and we feel it has helped make it one of the best bids being submitted to the FA."
