INTERVIEW: Luke Bell on his penalty save and captaining the Under-21s against Bristol City

The 'keeper saved a penalty late on...

26 March 2024

Luke Bell was the hero late on, as he saved a penalty ten minutes from time to earn the Sky Blues a point in the Professional Development League.

The referee pointed to the spot after he judged Bell to have brought down his man, a decision the ‘keeper didn’t agree with.

He then stepped-up to save the penalty, in what proved to be a crucial moment in the game to earn City a point at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Looking back at the game…

“We weren’t energetic enough from the start of the game, so to come away with a clean sheet and a point is a good result.

We have to do better from the start, we know that. I think in the last ten minutes of the game we were very good, and we had chances to win the game.”

Giving away and saving a penalty late on…

“It was never a penalty, ever. I won the ball and pushed it away, but the referee has said that it’s the height I have gone in at, so then the job for me is to save it.

He made his decision and I have guessed the right way and thankfully I’ve made the save.”

His mindset and emotions…

“I was raging to be honest, but you can’t dwell on it, you have to switch on and get back ready.

If it goes in, it’s a shame because we didn’t deserve that and it wasn’t a penalty, but I saved it at the end of the day and kept the clean sheet.”

Dealing with those decisions as a goalkeeper…

“Those are the problems you have as a ‘keeper, you have to keep a cool head and get back into the mindset of helping the team and saving the penalty.”

Captaining the Under-21s in the PDL…

“It’s always a pleasure to captain the team.

I do the same job whether I wear the armband or not, but it’s nice to be the eldest in the team and lead the lads and a proud moment.”
