INTERVIEW: Liam Kelly on Blackburn Rovers draw and his reflections on the 2023/24 campaign

The captain reflects on the game...

27 April 2024

Liam Kelly believes Coventry City's campaign has been a successful one, after it was confirmed that the Club will spend next season in the Sky Bet Championship.

City are on course for a strong top-half finish this term and reached the Emirates FA Cup Semi-Final, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final.

Reflecting on the draw at Blackburn:

“It was a tricky game against Blackburn, a team that are fighting for their lives to stay in the Championship. We probably didn’t have our best day either.

“We haven’t had a clean sheet in a while, so we’ll take a point and move on.

“We were down to ten men against a team fighting for their lives who need a win, and that makes it really difficult, but it’s a clean sheet regardless of how many shots they’ve had, which means we’ve defended well, and the ball never went in the back of our net.”

On his chance that hit the post:

“Yeah, I don’t know how that’s not gone in! I think in the end its ended up clipping both posts and on another day it just goes in."

On the challenge of defending the point with ten men:

“Yeah, that’s football and these things happen.

“It’s our third game in six days after playing extra time as well, so it’s tough on the legs with a lot of injuries, but the boys dug in and fought really hard to come out with a point and clean sheet.

“It’s that stage of the season there’s teams with a lot to play for, we’ve had a lot of games in a short space of time, and we’ve got a lot of injuries.

“The lads are out there doing the best they can.”

On being back in the starting eleven:

“It’s been nice to get back out on the pitch today and it's nice to play some football again. It’s been a little while obviously, it’s disappointing to not come away with the win.

"Obviously, you’re a professional and you want to play football as much as you can and that’s what you work hard to do, and you just be professional otherwise.”

Reflecting on the season:

“I think it’s been a successful one. We've obviously lost two of our best players, two of the best players in the league, and we’ve had a lot of the new players come through the door.

"It was a bit of a sticky start but we were close to the top six, and to get to the semi-finals of the Emirates FA Cup like the way we did, I think it’s a success.”
