City suffer more disappointment on the road as Southend outdo the Sky Blues...
City’s interim boss gave a very passionate and emotional post-match assessment of today’s loss against Southend United.
The Sky Blues went 1-0 down early on, and weren’t able to recover from the first-half deficit.
Jodie Jones provided the assist for a Dan Agyei goal a few minutes from time, but it was only small consolation for the 400+ travelling Sky Blue fans.
Mark Venus said: “I came here to the football club on behalf of football to work on football. I wasn’t brought into the football club by the owners.
“I came in as a football person by the manager [at the time] and was invited onto the board because I wanted to know how the board worked and how the budget worked.
“I work hard every day. Twelve hours a day for this football club.”
Coventry City fell to their fifth straight defeat in the league, despite progressing in cup competition midweek.
City are set to host second-placed Sheffield United on Thursday evening, and Venus is adamant that the club must now work towards maintaining their League One status.
“It isn’t doing very well. It needs help. Does it hurt? What do you think? It’s the toughest part of my career. Of course it hurts. I don’t like losing. This is my profession and what I come to work for and live for.
“They worked hard, had chances to score goals but again conceded three goals. Not good goals, basic goals. Basic physical goals and that’s what is beating them every week.
“We have to stop it and turn it around. The club have to stay in the league.”
