Born in Newcastle, Widdrington racked up over 370 appearances in the Football League in a 15-year career, before spending five years in non-league football.

His career began at Southampton, where he spent six years before moving to Grimsby Town. It was with the Mariners he won the Football League Trophy and gained promotion out of the Second Division in 1998.

Spells at Port Vale, Hartlepool, Macclesfield Town and Salisbury City followed, before the 45-year old turned his hand to management.

Widdrington was in charge of National League South side Eastbourne Borough for five years before joining the Sky Blues as Head of Recruitment in April 2017.
