REPORT: Under-21s beat Hednesford Town on penalties

City progress into the semi-finals of the Senior Cup...

8 March 2024

The Sky Blues Under-21s beat Hednesford Town 4-2 on penalties to progress into the semi-finals of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

Jake Jervis had put the hosts in front just before half-time, but minutes after the restart, City were level after Rylie Siddall equalised.

The game then went to penalties and it was City who overcome the Pitmen to progress into the next round.

It was a tight fought opening fifteen minutes at Keys Park, with chances at either end, with the better of those falling to the Sky Blues.

Bradley Stretton produced the games first shot on target, striking from the edge of the area and forcing Ryan Brown into a save down to his right.

From the resulting corner, the ball was cleared only as far as Rylie Siddall and he twisted and turned before getting a shot away, which was pushed onto the post by Brown in the Pitmen goal.

Space then opened up for Callum Perry 20 yards out and he unleashed a powerful strike which went narrowly wide.

City continued to ramp up the pressure and the game nearly saw the opening goal, only to be denied by a stunning fingertip stop from Brown to keep Conrad Ambursley’s effort.

Hednesford had a chance at the other end, with Danny Edwards firing inches over the bar after striking the ball on the turn from distance.

Moments before the break, the Pitmen hit the woodwork through Jake Jervis, when his effort hit the post and went behind for a goal kick.

However, seconds before the half-time whistle, Luke Bell was adjudged to have brought down Jervis in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Jervis stepped-up and sent Bell the wrong way to give the hosts the lead heading into the break.

HALF-TIME: Hednesford Town 1-0 Sky Blues

It was the perfect start to the second half for City as they drew level inside the opening five minutes.

Dermi Lusala slid the ball through for Charlie Finney and he drilled the ball towards the near post and Rylie Siddall was there to poke home and equalise.

City almost took the lead moments later when Elliot Betjemann’s curling effort from distance whistled past the post.

Both sides battled for a winner and the hosts thought they had it but they were denied by an incredible double save from Bell, to keep out Jervis and then Eden Bailey on the follow-up.
