INTERVIEW: Mark Robins looks back at defeat against West Brom

The manager provides his post-match analysis...

Mark Robins believes a ‘passive’ first half is what cost his side at The Hawthorns.

The Sky Blues fell to defeat against West Brom, with both of the hosts goals coming during the first 45 minutes.

Robins made a change at the break and introduced Haji Wright, who pulled one back for the Sky Blues in the second half.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins reflected on his sides performance.

Looking back on the game…

“We were too passive in the first half. We didn’t get out or get any sort of consistent time with the ball and that ended up costing us.

We had three really good chances to score in the first half. Ben has had two shots on goal and they’ve both gone in the net, I don’t think there was anything else.

It was one of those nights that had we been more positive in certain areas and had that aggression e had in the second half, we would have got something from the game or possibly won it.”

Growing into the game second half…

“They made some changes in the second half, and they had a really strong bench that they can bring on and make a difference.

But they brought them on and they weren’t as positive as they would have hoped as we were still on the front foot and trying to get a goal back.

Kasey gets brought down for the penalty and Haji finishes it really well. We’ve had Ellis in good positions and Torp in good positions to score and we didn’t work the goalkeeper enough or hit the target.

That was the bug bare in the second period and the first half because the chances we had were good chances and we didn’t hit them cleanly enough.”

The goals that were conceded…

“The two goals we gave away were poor.

Johnston puts the ball through Milan’s legs and then cuts it back Josh Eccles and in fairness he picks out a brilliant shot and finds the corner really well, but from our perspective it was poor.

The second one was nothing, the game was drifting into half-time and they get a run from Diangana we don’t deal with and we’re not aggressive enough and we didn’t get near them.”

The start to the game and change at half-time…

“The way I set the team up wasn’t right. We couldn’t get out or get any foothold on the game at all until we made the tweak in the second half.

Haji came on for Callum and it was harsh on Callum, he hadn’t done anything wrong, we just couldn’t get anything into the game.

We had really good secure footballers that are good technically they I felt coming into the game that we needed.

We needed to be better on the ball and try and secure it but that didn’t work because we didn’t have the ball enough to make that happen.

The changes came about because of the injuries that we’ve got.”
