City pegged back late on at Hillsborough...

26 January 2024

The Sky Blues were pegged back late on at Hillsborough to set-up a replay in the FA Cup Fourth Round.

Victor Torp fired the ball in from distance to put City in front on his debut, just before the break.

However, Wednesday levelled five minutes from time through Djeidi Gassama, setting up a replay at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The first real chance of the game fell to the Sky Blues and it was a corner whipped in from Josh Eccles, which was met by the head of Joel Latibeaudiere, but his effort landed on the top of the netting.

Matty Godden could have made it 1-0 ten minutes later, as he was on the end of a cutback which he fired over the bar from inside of the area.

The hosts best opportunity came after the 20-minute mark as a charging run from Anthony Musaba saw the attacker try his luck from distance, but he dragged his shot narrowly wide.

Five minutes before the break, Barry Bannan put a ball into the box, which was met by Ike Ugbo, but he couldn’t steer his header on target.

City would then take the lead on the stroke of half-time with an unstoppable strike from 30 yards out by Victor Torp on his debut, leaving Pierce Charles helpless.

HALF-TIME: Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Sky Blues

Following the restart, City almost had the chance to make it 2-0 when Ellis Simms was gifted a chance and he shifted the ball onto his right, but Charles saved well.

The Owls were denied a leveller by the woodwork, after Ugbo turned an unleashed a powerful strike which hit the post.

Bannan then had a strike from range, but it wasn’t troubling Ben Wilson, as it sailed over the bar.

At the other end, van Ewijk got in down the right and found Godden in the box, he took a touch and struck the ball towards goal, but he couldn’t find the target.

Wednesday found an equaliser with five minutes remaining as Djeidi Gassama struck from just inside of the area.
