REPORT: Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Coventry City

Three points on the road for City...

20 January 2024

A Ben Sheaf brace wrapped up the three points for the Sky Blues at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday.

An unstoppable strike before the break and then a poachers finish in the second half put the game beyond the Owls.

Josh Windass pulled one back for the hosts, but he was unable to prevent City climbing back into the top six.

City were on top during the early encounters, creating chances, but not finding a clear-cut opening, with Callum O’Hare forcing James Beadle into a stop from the edge of the area.

The hosts were looking to latch onto loose balls in behind and they almost capitalised when Ashley Fletcher raced through, but Bobby Thomas made an important interception.

The Sky Blues were moving the ball from left to right, and they found an opening through Milan van Ewijk and he played the ball across the six-yard box, but it was inches away from a Matty Godden foot.

Space opened up on the edge of the area for Ben Sheaf five minutes from the break, but his shot deflected narrowly wide of goal.

However, don’t give that man a second chance as when he picked up the ball 25 yards out a minute later, he bent the ball into the top corner, leaving Beadle with no chance.

HALF-TIME: Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Sky Blues

The game resumed with a big chance for the Owls and their captain Barry Bannan, but he attempted to lob Brad Collins and got it horribly wrong.

Wednesday would be left to rue that missed chance when Sheaf scored his and City’s second of the game, after he was on the end of a counter-attack in which he started.

They had a chance to halve the deficit just after the hour mark, but Josh Windass was denied by a fine stop from Collins at his near post.

Wednesday did pull one back 20 minutes from time as a ball in from the left was initially saved by Collins to deny Anthony Musaba but the rebound fell to Windass and he fired the ball into the back of the net.

The Sky Blues were searching for their two-goal cushion, and they had a glimpse of goal when Josh Eccles let fire from range, but Beadle saved well.

City were finding spaces in behind as Sheffield Wednesday committed more men up field, and they had opportunities with a Godden snapshot and a Palmer header, but they weren’t able to beat Beadle.

Collins produced an important stop at the other end with minutes left on the clock, comimg out to make himself big and deny Mallik Wilks from close range.
