City progress into the next round...

6 January 2024

Coventry City booked their place into the hat for the FA Cup Fourth Round after hitting Oxford United for six at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

First half goals from Joel Latibeaudiere, Ben Sheaf and Kasey Palmer got the ball rolling.

Then after the break, Callum O’Hare scored from the spot and then Matty Godden came off the bench to score a brace to cancel out goals from Mark Harris and Tyler Goodrham for the visitors.

The Sky Blues made an early breakthrough in the game, and it was a first goal at the Coventry Building Society Arena for Joel Latibeaudiere, as the defender flicked on a corner at the near post and beat Simon Eastwood.

However, the lead would be short lived after Oxford found an equaliser inside 90 seconds of City taking the lead and it would be Mark Harris who’s deflected shot that would beat Ben Wilson.

The goals were coming thick and fast, and the Sky Blues were back in front a minute later and it was created by Ellis Simms down the left and he pulled the ball back for Ben Sheaf and he fired the ball into the back of the net.

Another goal came five minutes later, and it was the pick of the bunch so far as Kasey Palmer let fire from 30 yards out and found the top corner to make it 3-1 to Mark Robins’ side.

Before the break, there was a chance to make it 4-1 from a set-piece 25 yards out, but Milan van Ewijk’s effort hit the top of the netting and the Yellows survived.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 3-1 Oxford United

The Sky Blues almost had the perfect start to the second half, breaking through the Oxford backline inside the opening minute and it was Callum O’Hare who looked for the bottom corner, but he would be denied by Eastwood.

The midfielder would get his goal though and it would come from the spot after Palmer was brought down in the area. Callum stepped up and sent Eastwood the wrong way to make it 4-1 to the Sky Blues.

There was a chance to make it 5-1 on the hour mark when Ellis Simms rolled his man in the box and got a shot away, but he was denied by the legs of Eastwood.

The visitors pulled one back before full-time through substitute Tyler Goodrham, as his strike from the edge of the area beat Ben Wilson.

However, City would restore their three-goal advantage when substitute Matty Godden slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

The striker then had time to add a second for himself with two minutes remaining to confirm the Sky Blues progression in the FA Cup.
