Simms rescues a point for the Sky Blues...

30 January 2024

Ellis Simms scored late on to earn a point for the Sky Blues against Bristol City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

City had taken the lead through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s strike midway through the first half, but they were pegged back before the break after Rob Dickie headed past Collins.

Nahki Wells then thought he had won it for the Robins ten minutes from time, but Ellis Simms equalise moments later to rescue a point.

The visitors started the game brightly, forcing Brad Collins into action inside the opening two minutes, as he got down low to his right to keep out Jason Knight’s strike from distance.

Collins then had to be alert to palm away Taylor Gardner-Hickman’s long-rage strike, which was straight down the middle of his goal.

Bristol City would be left to rue their early chances as the Sky Blues took the lead through their first shot on target and it was Sakamoto who found the back of the net.

Tatsu picked up the ball in the box after a cross from Jake Bidwell and he worked himself some space and picked out the bottom corner.

City were growing into the game, and they were looking to double their lead and this time it was Kasey Palmer who let fire from range, but Max O’Leary was equal to it.

Moments before the half-time whistle, the Robins found a leveller and it came through Rob Dickie, who headed home from an Anis Mehmeti cross.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-1 Bristol City

City came out the traps looking to get back into the lead and they had sighters through Sakamoto and O’Hare, but they were unable to test O’Leary.

Mark Robins looked to his bench as the game hit the hour mark and it was Ellis Simms, Haji Wright and Victor Torp who were introduced into the game.

It was Torp who came close to finding that second as he struck the ball from the edge of the area, but it deflected behind for a corner.

However, it would be visitors who would come from behind to take the lead in the 83rd minute and it was Nahki Wells who found the back of the net.

The Robins would only be in front for a matter of minutes as Ellis Simms equalised being the fastest to respond to a rebound after Liam Kitching’s strike was initially saved.
