PREVIEW: Sky Blues entertain Oxford United in Emirates FA Cup

City take on the Yellows at the CBS Arena...

5 January 2024

The Sky Blues return to the Coventry Building Society Arena for the first time in 2024, as they host Oxford United in the Emirates FA Cup.

Meet Oxford United:

Following three seasons of fighting for a place in the top six, last season saw the Yellows survive relegation on the final day of the season, thanks to then manager, Liam Manning.

Long-term boss Karl Robinson departed the Kassam Stadium in February 2023, with Manning his replacement and he would ultimately succeed in surviving the drop.

Manning then spent the summer rebuilding Oxford United and in some style as well, as he took the Yellows into the automatic places in League One, with nine wins in their opening 11 games.

However, Bristol City would come calling and Oxford were left to look for a third manager in the space of 12 months, with Des Buckingham being handed his first managerial role in England.

The former Mumbai City manager has endured a mixed start to life at United, picking up three wins in his first eight fixtures, leaving Oxford sat 5th in League One heading into this weekend.

Opposition View:

Des Buckingham

“We make no secret of the league being the priority and we will reset after these two cup games. We go into Saturday after two wins in three league games so we want to come back and start the second half of the season strongly.

“But the FA Cup is far from a distraction. It brings a magic and we will be taking 3,000 fans to Coventry, which is brilliant. It gives us another opportunity to keep working on the way we want to play, maybe a chance to look at one or two other ideas, but it’s about making sure we are as sharp as we can be on Saturday and then hopefully we welcome a few players back when we play in the league at Carlisle the following weekend.

“We will start as underdogs this weekend, playing against a team from the league above. They have picked up form and are on a good run so we know it will be a good test for us. But we will go there looking to put on a performance and hoping that it allows us to get a win and to go through to the next round.”
