INTERVIEW: Mark Robins hails his side after an 'absolutely outstanding' win against Leicester

13 January 2024

Mark Robins believes his side were ‘absolutely outstanding’ as they came from behind to beat Leicester City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had fired the Foxes in front, but a 15 minute spell in the second half blew Leicester away.

Callum O’Hare got the scoring underway, before Milan van Ewijk put City in front and then O’Hare wrapped up the points deep into stoppage time.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins addressed his sides performance and some of the key decisions.

Looking back on the game…

“I thought we were really good. So, let's go back to 11 plays on the field, we were absolutely outstanding.

“I thought that we not only kept the ball and moved the ball pretty well, but we created some decent chances and really you've got to look at the qualities of them (Leicester), they've got incredible ability, they've got speed, speed of thought, speed of feet, speed of passing, and we have to get into positions where we can not just sit off and be passengers in a game.

“We’ve got 30,000 supporters in the building, so we had to try and do something to help us get a foothold in it and I thought that we did it really well.

“We blocked them off stop them really attacking and we built good attacks, and we create some decent chances.”

Leicester’s goal and the penalty…

“Then there was just a lull in the game where we for whatever reason, we started taking too many torches in certain areas we ended up just been a bit sloppy and then there's a loose pass or a soft pass that doesn't quite reach and that allows them to come and press and we ended up giving the penalty away off the back of that, so there's no need for it because we were in the game and I mean strongly in the game.

“We were causing them problems and then we ended up giving a penalty way and I've seen it back and it looks like a penalty, it looks like a foul, he's caught him on the top of his thigh and then they've scored the goal, and you feel that it's a little bit of a kick in the teeth.”

The red card…

“He comes off his feet and he's moving at speed, and he jumps off his feet and hits Bidders and the referee then doesn't even hazard a guess he's got a red card out.

“That changes the dynamic of the game at that point. So, we speak about it at halftime. They obviously changed, you've ended up with Harry Winks on his own and then you've got opportunities to do things, but we need to keep the speed in the game whilst also knowing that if they if they want to win if they can.”

Callum O’Hare’s leveller…

“The introduction of the subs just lifted everything and gave us that little bit of an energy kick and a bit of quality, and we got into good positions.

“Ellis Simms off the left-hand side was fantastic because he gave us that speed off the back of Pereira and he managed to get the ball and then Callum O’Hare’s feet were brilliant and he slides into the far corner and that's one one. But then you've got 15 minutes left and you've got to try and go and get the second goal and we were in control of the game.”

Milan’s goal…

“I thought we had been good for all the second half and a lot of the first half as well. I thought we were really good.

“Then the second goal, obviously comes from Milan and for me his positioning, I thought he was too far inside at times, but his positioning inside was perfect from across the left-hand side it gets headed out and he takes a torch and finishes it in the far corner and it was magnificent.”

The third goal…

“That typifies what we're all about. We’ve got it on the right-hand side and Callum is there and he initially joins the press, and we win the ball back and he follows and Matty Godden’s run into the box and it lands and Godden enables that to happen and his finish was magnificent.

“I think if there was any way that they needed a confidence boost or belief then that should fill the gap. I think really the performance was absolutely outstanding. Incredible.”
