INTERVIEW: Jake Bidwell looks back at draw to Bristol City

The defender gave his thoughts...

30 January 2024

Jake Bidwell shares his thoughts following Coventry’s 2-2 draw to Bristol City at the CBS Arena.

Goals from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ellis Simms saw the Sky Blues come back from behind to earn a hard-fought point.

Reaction to the draw…

“We probably were not at our best tonight.

“For the first time in a while, we dipped below our standards.

“We are a little disappointed from that point of view, but it was good character from the lads to come out with something from the game when we are not at our best.

“We showed good character to get something from the game and all them points hopefully will prove to be important at the end of the season.

“We will dust ourselves down and be ready to go on Saturday.”

Run of games…

“This is the Championship, we are coming to the end of January, there is a lot of games and this is what it is about.

“There is no excuses, this is the Championship and there is only one way to go, and that is to go through it and attack it.

“You can come to a crossroad in the season, you can either carry on (the run of form) and push, and go and achieve something, or you can feel a little sorry for ourselves and feel tired and tight.

“It is important we can pick up points when we are not at our best.”

Involvement in the first goal…

“I managed to get forward. It probably was not my best cross, it was a bit loopy, but I just tried to get forward and show a bit of intent.

“It got us on the front foot and it was a great finish so I am pleased with that.

“We are not a massive team so we do not like to hook balls in the box from everywhere.

But if I can arrive late and join the attacks that is something I can do to help the team.

“I would like to chip in with more assists, but I am happy to be out there contributing.”

Ellis Simms’ goal…

“It took something different to get us back in the game (Liam Kitching’s shot).

“I think it took the goalkeeper by surprise, I think it took everyone by surprise.

“His shot, he caught it well and it was a strikers’ finish.

“Right place at the right time, so hopefully it will do him the world of good and he can go on a goalscoring run, that would be great.”

His run of games in the starting XI…

I am just trying to enjoy it.

“It was frustrating at the start of the season for me but that is football.

“We have a 25 man squad so not everyone can play, but I am enjoying being back in the team and doing everything I can to help the lads and stay in the team.”

Looking onto February…

“We have put ourselves into a decent position in both competitions.

“But it is only January and it is a long season.

“We are coming into the real thick part of the season, so we need to attack it with everything we have got.

“We have had a good run but that does not count for anything at the end of January, it is where we are at the end of April.

“We have set good standards for ourselves and there is a long way to go. Hopefully we can keep improving and achieve something really special.”

Norwich away next…

“If you take your eye off the ball and get ahead of yourself, the league will beat you up really quickly.

“We have some midweek games coming up, so we have to be ready to perform. Every game we will prepare properly, one game at a time.”
