ACADEMY: Mark Delaney delighted with Barnsley win in FA Youth Cup

City progress into the next round...

17 January 2024

Mark Delaney was delighted, as he praised his side for their efforts, as they saw past Barnsley in the FA Youth Cup.

City fell behind early on, but they came back in style, with goals from Rylie Siddall, Kai Andrews, Conrad Ambursley and Aidan Dausch.

The win sees City progress into the fifth round of the competition with either Grimsby Town or Millwall awaiting them.

Speaking after the final whistle, Delaney looked back at the game’s proceedings.

Looking back at the game…

Yeah, we’re delighted.

“We knew Barnsley were going to be a tough game, but we expressed the opportunity this creates for us. It was all about us and how we prepared.

“The days training was spot on, and the lads were in a good place, so to go one-nil down was a surprise, but credit to the boys, they just shook it off.

“I thought we came back really, really strong and I thought we deserved it in the end.”

Bouncing back from conceding early…

“It happened at Preston and that's not something we want to continue doing because the better teams we play now moving forward, you might not get that chance to get back into it, but it does show the resilience about us as a team.

“To score then four goals, three in the first half and even the second half, we probably created more in the second half. Although we were kind of in a good shape defending what we had, so overall to come back from that, we're really pleased.”

Praising his side…

“I could pick out all of them to be honest with you because it does take a team to get a result against a Barnsley team who are strong.

“I could pick out from goalkeeper all the way through, but you know we're delighted as an academy.

“We shout about the players that we've got, the talent we've got within the four walls but it's pleasing to be able to show it in front of a home crowd and hopefully the first team staff as well.”

Conrad Ambursley scoring the pick of the bunch…

“He does it in training all the time. He’s a very confident boy and I thought tonight he showed glimpses of what he's about, he's something different.

“In that three up top we've got Aidan, who's you know a threat in behind on the shoulder and we've got Riley Siddall who got the goal scoring underway, coming off the right and then Conrad off the left I thought he was a threat all night.”
