REPORT: Plymouth Argyle 2-2 Coventry City

14 February 2024

The Sky Blues snatched a late but fair point on the road against Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday evening.

Morgan Whittaker had fired the hosts in front, but Ellis Simms equalised ten minutes later to draw City level.

However, a Mickel Miller cross deflected off Bobby Thomas and past Brad Collins, to leave the Sky Blues empty handed.

City's leveller came deep into stoppage time when a Victor Torp cross was turned in by Liam Kitching at the near post.

The game’s first opening fell at the feet of the Plymouth captain, as Morgan Whittaker got in down the right and forced Brad Collins into a smart save down low to his near post.

At the other end, a good move created space for Matty Godden on the edge of the area and his shot from distance was saved well by Conor Hazard.

Quick feet and pace from Milan van Ewijk produced the games next opening out of nothing, as City’s fullback forced Hazard into a fine stop after a strike from distance was heading into the bottom corner.

The shots were raining in from range, as Hazard was enduring a busy night, this time he had to get down to keep out a strike from Victor Torp which skidded up off the surface and into the ‘keeper’s arms.

The best chance of the half then fell to the Sky Blues from inside of the area, but Matty Godden was unable to turn in Jake Bidwell’s cross.

Moments later it was Ellis Simms who was released on goal, but with a defender closing in, the striker couldn’t hit the target.

The final chance before the break presented itself to the hosts and it was Whittaker once more, but this time he fired into the side netting.

HALF-TIME: Plymouth Argyle 0-0 Sky Blues

The Sky Blues started the second half on top and they worked their way through the Argyle defence and the ball broke for Godden, but his turn and hit was saved well by Hazard.

However, it would be the Pilgrims who would break the deadlock and it was a ball pulled back across the box that was finished off by Whittaker to make it 1-0.

That lead would last only ten minutes as the Sky Blues were level after Torp played a stunning ball through for Simms and despite his initial shot being saved, he followed-up and turned in the rebound.

But City were only level for a few minutes as a cross in from the left by Mickel Miller came off Bobby Thomas and past Collins into the back of the net.

The defender had a chance to score at the other end ten minutes from time, but he couldn’t steer Torp’s corner on target, as he headed wide.

However, City found their muched-deserved equaliser at the end thanks to a Liam Kitching flick at the near post.
