INTERVIEW: Joel Latibeaudiere on wearing captain's armband and Sheffield Wednesday win

Lati captained the Sky Blues to victory against the Owls...

Joel Latibeaudiere said he was honoured when he found out he would be leading the Sky Blues out against Sheffield Wednesday.

Latibeaudiere captained City to a 4-1 victory against the Owls, as goals from Callum O’Hare, Kasey Palmer and Haji Wright helped City progress into the next round.

The defender looked back on the game after the final whistle and looked ahead to the next round tie against Maidstone United.

Looking back at the game…

“We had a great start with Kasey’s (Palmer) goal, but we slipped up with an unlucky goal, not clearing a set piece right, but then we come out in the second half really aggressive.

“We got our main men on the ball, got them turning and running at their back four or five and they did their stuff. Four great goals.”

Hectic first half…

“Adi said at half time, there was way too many chances for the away team. We all agreed on that, so we tightened up as a back four and got one of the midfielders to be more of a pivot player.

“There was a lot of turnovers that we made because of that change, and led to a couple goals which were taken brilliantly.”

On the quick spell of goals in the second period…

“That is what we needed, especially in these cup ties because everyone knows anything can happen. Especially playing a team for a fourth time, it becomes really difficult, but I thought the boys were class tonight.

“We did what we needed to do, we got the win, we have got Maidstone now and we will look forward to that.”

Callum O’Hare and Kasey Palmer…

“You can tell we missed Callum at the start of the season, just that energy he brings as well, what he can do with the ball is ridiculous of course. His energy, off the ball, moving, creating space for players.

“Having Kasey back is great, he is so strong. He is getting his confidence back again now and yeah it is great to have them both out there on the pitch.

“I thought Jay (Dasilva) was the standout performer today, not being in the team is really hard and he has been working really hard in training. So I take my hat off to him because he has been such a professional in the situation.

“To not get the gametime he would like recently, and put in a performance like that is class.”

Haji Wright…

“That goal is what Haji needs to get that confidence again. I feel like he was coming into his own and then he picked up that injury, that little niggle against Middlesbrough.

“We really wanted to get him a goal, and what a goal it was, an absolute bullet header. It was a great night for him.”

First appearance as the Sky-Blue captain…

“The gaffer told me yesterday. I was honoured to hear him say that and I am glad he trusts me to lead out the team, in a cup tie as well.

“That is the first time for me being the skipper in a cup tie so I was really pleased with that.

“I thought I took on the role well, I managed to get the team going. I was loud and vocal on the pitch, did what I could. A big thanks to the team as well for getting through that.”

His relationship with Mark Robins…

“All I ask for in a manager is clarity, and the gaffer gives me that all the time. He lets me know the reasons for his choices.

“To be honest we have such good squad depth now, we have near enough 18, 19 players who can start, so for the gaffer it is a horrible place to be.

“But also, you want that, you want to have an 18-man selection. Training is through the roof and so competitive.

“Me and the gaffer have a great relationship, we talk a lot, and he trusts me. I play in a lot of positions, and he was buzzing to put me in at centre half.”

Looking ahead to the month…

“February is a crazy month, but when we had a lot of games, thick and fast over Christmas and January we did really well.

“So, I think it is another great opportunity to get points back on the board. We dropped some against Norwich, but we bounced back today, and hopefully take today into Millwall on Sunday.

“We like the Monday-Friday schedule, the games on TV, on Sky at the CBS. It will be great and I cannot wait to get back into those league games now.”
