INTERVIEW: Ben Wilson on being recalled to the side, facing Preston North End and working hard

The 'keeper looks ahead to the clash against Preston...

Ben Wilson said he was ‘buzzing’ to be named in the starting eleven against Stoke City last weekend.

The ‘keeper made his return to action after three months out of the side in the Championship, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win against Stoke City.

Wilson looked back at his time out of the side and explained how pleased he was to be back out there representing the Sky Blues.

Getting back into the starting eleven…

“I was buzzing, it had been a log few months, but I kept my spirits high and trained hard and got my rewards in the end and thankfully went out there and we got the win and the clean sheet.”

Was it tough being out of the team…

“At first it was because personally I didn’t feel like I deserved to come out of the team, but it did me the world of good and I spoke to the Gaffer and got my head right and I was down, but I got back into a place where I thought the only way I will get my place back in the team is if I work hard.

I got my head down, worked hard and it’s great to see I’ve been rewarded for my hard work.”

How he felt against Stoke…

“I felt aright going into the game, there weren’t too many nerves and then towards the end it was a bit like, come on let’s get through and not do anything stupid and keep the ball out of the net and hopefully my defenders will head the ball away like they did for me last year.”

Keeping a good relationship in the goalkeeper group…

“You feel for Brad, I went through that a few months ago when he took the shirt off me, but its part and parcel of the position we chose.

When we’re out there we laugh and we carry on, more than we probably should, but there’s no negative attitude towards one another, we work hard and push one another.

Over the years with Simon and Marko we’ve always had a close-knit group and Aled does a great job of keeping us all together and we work hard on the pitch, and we’ve all been rewarded at one stage, and it can only be down to the hard work we put in individually.”

Being on the bench recently…

“I’ve been on the bench fort the last three months and I hated. I want to be out there and help the team and I want to do my part.

It was difficult being on the bench, but the lads did brilliantly, and I take my hat off to them, I want us to win and get promoted, so I cheered the boys on as much as I could and give my all without being on the pitch.”

Facing Preston North End…

“If we perform well, we know we’re at home and we can beat anyone at home, we’ve never had a good time against Preston over the last few years, but it’s another game to take by the scruff of the neck and hopefully get three points.”

What he did whilst he was out of the team…

“I put a lot of weight on during the course of the season, I wanted to build up, but I got to a stage where I thought I wasn’t getting my rewards on the pitch for doing this, so I’ve lost quite a bit of weight by working hard and doing extra in the gym.

I added more protein and creatine to my diet, and I was lifting more weights in the gym, but I got stuck in a zone of trying to bulk up and it didn’t work for me.

I think now its shown and I’ve been put back into the team and I think mentally it has done me the world of good.”
