REPORT: Coventry City 3-3 Manchester United - Man United win 4-2 on penalties

21 April 2024

The Sky Blues exit the FA Cup in the semi-final on penalties, after an unbelievable comeback against Manchester United.

United had the first chance of the game when a long ball forward by Onana was flicked on by Bruno Fernandes into the path Alejandro Garnacho, but he couldn’t connect properly, and his attempt went wide.

Another ball over the top released Marcus Rashford this time and as he raced through on goal, he put his shot wide.

Man United would break the deadlock midway through the first half when a ball across the face of goal was met at the back post by the on running Scott McTominay, who slotted the ball into the back of the net.

The Sky Blues were growing into the game, and they thought they had created the leveller when Josh Eccles skipped through the United midfield and looked to pick out Ellis Simms at the back post, but Diogo Dalot made a last ditch interception to prevent City’s number nine from firing home.

A minute before the break, Brad Collins produced a superb save to deny Rashford, as he got fingertips onto his strike, tipping it behind for a corner.

However, from the resulting corner, Fernandes picked out Harry Maguire in the box and he headed the ball past Collins to double United’s lead.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-2 Manchester United

United had stretched their lead further following the resumption of the game, as a Fernandes strike deflected off Bobby Thomas and wrong-footed Collins in the City goal.

City went in search of a route back into the game and there was an opportunity for Callum O’Hare with a diving header, but he couldn’t steer his effort on target.

The Sky Blues did get a goal back and it came through a ball into the box from Fabio Tavares, as he picked out Simms in the box and he fired the ball past Onana to make it 3-1.

City had another one back with ten minutes remaining and it was an O’Hare stike from range that deflected off Wan-Bissaka and went over Onana and into the back of the net.

The Sky Blues were almost level when a corner was cleared only as far as Victor Torp and his volley stung the palms of Onana.

The comeback was complete in the 95th minute when Haji Wright converted a penalty past Onana and City were level against all the odds.

A shot from range for the Sky Blues gave them a sighter, but Sheaf couldn’t hit the target and he fired wide.
