INTERVIEW: Mark Robins delighted with Leeds win and thanks Coventry City supporters

The manager gives his assessment...

6 April 2024

Mark Robins was delighted after his side picked up three points against Leeds United.

Goals from Ellis Simms and Haji Wright either side of half-time ensured that Joel Piroe’s late strike would prove to be nothing more than a consolation strike.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins was full of praise for his side and the Coventry City supporters, who set a record for the highest league attendance at the Arena.

The supporters breaking the league record at the Coventry Building Society Arena…

“It was a brilliant atmosphere. The ringing in my ears is nothing like I have ever heard before and the noise was brilliant.

It makes a huge difference.

The supporters made it special coming in their droves and that’s brilliant because not only have they come in numbers they’ve seen a good performance and a good result against a top team.

With season tickets coming out soon, they will all look to snap them up as soon as possible.

It’s brilliant here when it’s a full house, the atmosphere is outstanding, and they help to create that performance and thank you to them.”

Reflecting on the game…

“We’ve taken part in the game today; it hasn’t been a case of us sitting behind the ball. We started to tire and that’s when we started to give away ground and it encouraged them to come at us.

They’re really good players and they’ve had chances, so we’ve had a bit of luck. Piroe and Bamford have miskicked one, Summerville had one cleared off the line when Bidwell has come from nowhere to clear it away over the bar.

The goal they scored was a brilliant finish and there’s only one gap and he’s calm enough to see the gap and pass it through it into the net and that’s the quality that they have.

Milan and Joel, that’s the best I’ve seen anyone marshal Summerville. He’s movement is really good and his speed, btu we’ve dealt with that.”

Ellis and Haji’s goals…

“We were really good in the first half. Ellis puts us in front from a set-play. Kitch heads it back in and Ellis is on his toes and it’s brave and he gets his 18th of the season.

Haji then gets his 17th. It’s Josh Eccles birthday today and the shape on the cross was perfect for Haji coming onto it and he just meets with the outside of his right foot, and it was brilliant, and it gives us a cushion.”

Getting over the line…

We see the game out, with bodies on the line and we were calmish in those areas and when we were calm, we came away with the ball and gave ourselves more time in possession.

To defend the way, we did was outstanding, and three points is very welcome because we watched the game earlier on between Norwich and Ipswich and Norwich win and we need to keep picking up points up.

Because we dropped them on Monday it became more imperative that we picked up the points and at this stage of the season we need to keep picking the points up and now it’s about recovery and how we go again.

From now till then we need to see how we can get a side out that’s fresh enough to put in a performance against a really good Southampton team.”

Executing the game plan…

“We have conversations about the team, and we wanted to have a go and can we have a go at them because they’re so good.

Where are we going to get hurt, where are we likely to be and we needed to solve problems and we talk about these things and come up with game plans and what we want to do.

The players then need to take it into the game and execute that and I think they’ve done it really well. I would still like us to be more imposing in terms of trying to get up the field to lift some pressure and we spoke about that after the game but it’s a brilliant performance at the end of the day.”
