ACADEMY: Coventry City exit the Birmingham Senior Cup after defeat to Aston Villa

12 April 2024

Coventry City exit the Birmingham Senior Cup, after falling to defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park in the semi-finals.

The Sky Blues had the first chance of the game when Charlie Finney latched onto a through ball, but he couldn’t get the connection he would have liked and his shot went wide of goal.

The hosts first chance fell at the feet of Kobei Moore inside the area, but he was denied by the outstretched arm of Luke Bell, who produced a fine stop.

However, Villa took the lead just after the half hour mark when a sharp move on the edge of the area resulted in Rory Wilson finding the back of the net.

That lead would last only a matter of seconds as a fine move down the right resulted in Jayden Smith picking out Kain Ryan at the back post and he met the ball on the volley and fired past James Wright to make it 1-1.

HALF-TIME: Aston Villa 1-1 Sky Blues

Following the restart, Villa were back in front, and it was Rory Wilson again who found the back of the net, coming onto a pass on the edge of the area, which he converted into the bottom corner.

City almost responded immediately once again, but this time, after beating his man, Aidan Dausch saw his shot saved by the legs of James Wright.

That lead was doubled 20 minutes from time, as a mistake at the back enable Aiden Borland to capitalise and slot the ball past Bell.

Again, there was an opportunity for City pull one back instantly after an Aston Villa goal, but after the ball was pulled back by Dermi Lusala, Elliot Betjemann could only fire over the bar.

Dausch had a chance moments later, but his shot from a tight angle was saved at his near post by Wright and pushed behind for a corner.

From the resulting set-piece, the ball was cleared only as far as Betjemann and his shot came back into the box and was flicked on by Dausch and it was saved well by the outstretched hand of Wright.
