REPORT: Ipswich Town U21s 3-0 Coventry City U21s

5 September 2023

Coventry City Under-21s fell to defeat against Ipswich Town in the Professional Development League, at the home of the Tractor Boys’ Training Centre.

Justin Obikwu had the games first attempt, winning the ball back deep inside the Ipswich half, before dragging a strike wide of goal.

At the other end, Nico Valentine raced down the left-hand side and from a tight angle, he forced Luke Bell into a smart save at his near post.

However, Bell was unable to prevent the Tractor Boys taking the lead, as Matt Ward’s ball into the box was met by the head of Gerrard Bliabo, and he diverted the ball into the back of the net.

City weathered Ipswich’s attack after they had taken the lead and began to grow back into the game, creating space outside of the for Bradley Stretton to fire a shot into the arms of Henry Gray.

Minutes later, the hosts were awarded a penalty, after the referee adjudged one of City’s Trialists to have committed a foul in the area. Osman Foyo stepped up and he sent Bell the wrong way, firing his spot kick into the top corner.

Ipswich came close to doubling their advantage when Oli Davis worked his way into the area, but after having two bites at the cherry, Davis would ultimately fire over the bar.

Before the break, Bell made a superb save to keep the scores at 2-0, getting down low to his left to keep out Nico Valentine.

HALF-TIME: Ipswich Town 2-0 Sky Blues

Luke Bell started the second half how he ended the first, producing a fine save to keep out Oli Davis again this time, seconds after the restart.

City were in search of a way back into the game, going close after some good work down the left, which eventually fell to Marco Rus, but his strike went wide.

Ipswich did find a third 20 minutes from time and it was Davis who finally beat Bell at the near post, after City had looked promising.

Despite falling further behind, Dempster’s side continued to push and get back into the game in the last ten minutes, with Rus stinging the ‘keeper’s palms with a strike from range.
