INTERVIEW: Mark Robins on away triumph at QPR and Ellis Simms double

The manager spoke after the final whistle...

30 September 2023

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins has described this afternoon's win over Queens Park Rangers as a "massive boost" ahead of a week that will see City take on both Blackburn Rovers and Norwich City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Ellis Simms fired home a double, either side of a long-range strike from Josh Eccles, to help Coventry to all three points on the road.

Q: Well done, did you sense that win was coming?

It was really important that we go for the win. The longer it goes on the more it can dent confidence. The supporters were really good today because it wasn't a brilliant first half. The players needed the support and they needed to be lifted. The support drove them on and that was so evident in the second half.

We found space with Jamie Allen and we scored a fantastic goal through Ellis Simms. He took it early and it was the goal that he needed, a great finish.

Then we had confidence, you could see it. Josh Eccles scored a goal by getting higher and thankfully he took the chance he had. He is capable of doing that, even with the deflection, he controlled the effort at got his rewards for it.

We then needed to remain in control. We need to be even better, and we were good. Our third goal was a brilliant finish, outstanding. It put the game to bed and we were still looking for more.

We should not have conceded, that was the only blip, and we need to cut that out. They are not a bad team, they come after you and there is a lot of confidence.

It was a really good, much-needed, win. Things are moving forward nicely

Q: Is it a relief to see Ellis on the scoresheet?

Ellis was perhaps trying too hard, he was snatching at things against good defenders. They have good players in the side and we can hurt teams, there's no doubt. It's difficult because we have lost players but we have players coming back from injury, like Jamie, and that gave us enough to win this game.

Q: And what about that stunning save from Ben Wilson?

He's got a good hand to it and it was crucial. There were a few good saves from him, a few brilliant ones including the one from Dykes. Ben has done so well.

Q: Are you hoping for more away wins to follow?

Absolutely. We just have to find that consistent way of winning games. We now have two home games against difficult opponents. Things had to turn at some point and we need to work towards that being this week.

This is a massive boost ahead of Blackburn. When you're drawing you're not losing - but you need to see wins out. The goal we conceded on Monday was poor and they're all very similar. We can solve that but it means working hard and doing our jobs properly.

They're a new team and they're getting to trust each other, which is a big work. Trust is huge and we had so much trust last season, and now we need to find that and trust our new players.
