INTERVIEW: John Dempster relfects on Coventry City Under-21s defeat against Ipswich

5 September 2023

John Dempster admitted a bad day for his Under-21s side cost them as they fell to defeat against Ipswich Town in the Professional Development League.

City's youngsters fell behind early in Suffolk and ended the day on the end of a 3-0 defeat.

Speaking after the defeat, Dempster admited that bad days like that were rare for Under-21s group but has called upon his young squad to learn from their mistakes.

So John, your thoughts on that one this afternoon?

That was a very disappointing afternoon. I think Ipswich were by the far superior team. If you start any game like that, it's going to be an uphill struggle.

The first five minutes were unacceptable. I think they shared a lot more desire and hunger than us and it was almost like we were holding back a little bit. I don't know whether that's because it was a hot day, or an early rise, but there's no excuse.

The best team won today and obviously it's back to the drawing board for us. We need to value defending a bit more. We've got a lot of exciting attacking players but, as a team, we've conceded too many goals and, like I say, the only credit today really goes to Ipswich because I thought they were at it from start to finish, and and we weren't.

Is that where the game was lost for you today, during the first half an hour or so?

Yeah, I think so. A lot of the one-on-one duels, they were coming out with the ball. Some of the defending that you expect to see in and around your penalty area wasn't there today. And like I say, the desire levels were nowhere near it.

I think the more experienced Under-21s players need to take responsibility and show more leadership skills in the build-up to the game and, obviously, when you get on the grass.

However, when you look at the bigger picture, the best players on the pitch weren't in a Sky Blue shirt today.

Does it give you something to look at and learn from in the week as we head into the next one?

Yeah, without a doubt, of course we will pick the bones out of it and sit down with the players and go through it to try and help them individually, but they've got to take some responsibility as well, for their own development and performance levels on the pitch.

Like I say, today hasn't happened that often. But today, we were well short.
