INTERVIEW: John Dempster gives Swansea City reaction after late defeat

Sky Blues Under-21s Head Coach, John Dempster was disappointed to come away empty handed from his side’s clash with Swansea City.

The Sky Blues fell behind in the game, but were in front with ten minutes remaining after a brace from Justin Obikwu.

However, Swansea scored twice late on to snatch all three points in the Professional Development League fixture.

Speaking after the final whistle, Dempster believes there were positives to take, but reiterated that his side have to defend better.

Reflecting on the game…

“I think we looked a real threat all afternoon going forward and when we were set and in the right shape, nine times out of 10 we won the ball back When we were pressing.

“We looked a real threat on the counter attack, but where we fell short again today was defending the box defending crosses.

“When you play with a back three you expect as a minimum players to be heading the ball away from your goal, as opposed to the opposition heading balls towards your goal and that's happened too many times this season.

“That's something we'll look at and work on going forward and hopefully develop the players in that that area.”

Individual performances…

“I thought there was some good individual performances. Justin was a handful today, Aiden Dausch when he came on looked a real threat and it’s good to see him stepping up with the Under-21s.

“There were glimpses from Evan Eghosa and Marco Rus and the Trialists worked really hard today as well. I've got to say I thought they put a shift in because it's difficult coming into a new group and a new team when you don't know anybody and perform.

“The game was there to be won. I think we have two or three real good opportunities at 2-1 to go and put it to bed. And we weren't good enough in the key moments from that point of view and we've definitely got to be better at defending our box.”

Coming from behind in the game initially…

“We actually came out the blocks really well which we were pleased with because we didn't start great last week.

“So, we were pleased with the start disappointed to go one nil down. I think it was a brilliant strike from their lad, but I think Luke Bell will be a little bit disappointed that he didn’t do better with it speaking to him at halftime.

“There were some real positives today but of course if you concede three goals at any level, it makes difficult to win a football match.

“Although stupidly you know we could have we could have still won today. But we have to have a look at our out of possession defending.”

Update on Marco Rus…

“It didn't look great.

“I think their lad has tried to do a professional foul to stop us breaking again, which you can understand from almost the first team point of view, three points are up for grabs, but it was quite a high tackle and he's got a nasty gash quite high on his shin.

“So hopefully, we'll have a look at that and with a little bit of treatment and rest in recovery Marco will be alright, but we'll have to have him assessed after again.”
