INTERVIEW: Ellis Simms on Coventry City double at QPR and Ben Wilson's save

Simms scores his first goals for the Club at Loftus Road...

30 September 2023

Sky Blues striker Ellis Simms says he is hoping to push on after finding his first, and second, goal in a Coventry City shirt following his summer transfer from Everton.

The forward had to be patient to find his first goal for the Club but had to only wait 12 minutes to find his second, as he helped Mark Robins' side to a win away at Queens Park Rangers.

Q: Was that the perfect match for you and the team?

I mean, to get the three points is the main thing. We knew coming here would be difficult but all around it was a great team performance, especially the second half. We were dug in and then we've got the goal, so it's great to come here and get the points.

Q: All three goals came during a 12-minute spell in that second half!

Yes, it's good. I mean, we were playing good football in the first half. I, myself had a few chances and didn't take them but we had to keep going and not let our heads drop and we went into the second half positive, and then we created a lot of chances. We managed to take them this time.

Q: You mentioned the chances, I think both came down the right-hand side for you!

Yeah, we were playing good football. We were stretching them behind and we were moving the ball well. So yeah, when there was space in behind we just played in there and it seemed to get us up the pitch, which was good.

Q: Goalless at half time and you didn't take your chances but you must have been pleased to see Ben Wilson pull off a decent save!

Yeah, it was a magnificent save. I'm gonna watch it back. Maybe the defending could have been could have been a bit tighter but I'm not sure, but it was a great save. When you've got him in goal, you know he can pull off those spectacular saves and that was definitely one of them.

Q: Finally, you've seen the net bulge!

Yeah, it means a lot. I know first half I was a bit disappointed because I had a few chances because I haven't scored yet for Coventry. So yeah, as a personal moment: I'm delighted to get off the mark, especially to get two. Hopefully, I can just build from it.

It'll give me a lot of confidence going into the next game. I'm looking forward to the next games before the international break. We're still early in the season but I just want to help the team out. I transferred here in the summer so I want to repay the Club for bringing me in.

It was a slow start for me and I would have liked to have scored sooner and maybe be a bit sharper, but I think today is a great landmark and hopefully, I can go from it.

Q: You must be relieved following that slow start to life here?

I'm just getting used to new facilities, new coaching staff and new teammates. There's been big change. I'm here on a permanent deal so this is my new home.

For whatever reason, I don't know, I've been working hard in training so hopefully now I can build from it. Hopefully, I can score more goals and we can keep winning.
