ACADEMY: Coventry City Under-18s looking to continue fine start to League season after Cup defeat

8 September 2023

Coventry City Under-18s will be looking to continue their fine start to their U18 Professional Development League campaign after falling to a defeat against Bristol City in the Professional Development League Cup.

Bristol City took the lead early on from a pin-point delivery but the young Sky Blues responded well to going behind and were unlucky not to find a leveller.

Charlie Finney impressed and came close to finding an equaliser, while Aiden Dausch also caused plenty of problems for City's youngsters.

"We did really well. The performance was strong after falling behind early, and the only disappointing thing was that their goalkeeper made a number of really strong saves," said Lead Youth Development Phase Coach, Matt Whitehouse.

"The intent that the lads showed was really positive. It wasn't all one-sided but we reacted really well to the goal and put real pressure on them.

"It would have been interested had we scored, because we'd have had all the moment.

"We asked the lads to step up and perform against a really good team and they did that really well, individually and as a team.

"Except for the lack of chances taken, we were really pleased with the lads," he said.

Despite defeat in the Cup, the young Sky Blues have not been eliminated and have two more games to go in their four-team group stage.

City's Under-18s will return to action tomorrow (Saturday) when they will take on Ipswich Town at the Alan Higgs Centre (12pm).

"It's not too demoralising on that front, we just need to do well now in the next two games now and then we will qualify," continued Whitehouse.

"We're back to league action next time out, however, against Ipswich Town. We started the season really well and we're just trying to continue to work towards those targets.

"Ipswich are coming to us and we're really confident going into it. If we can play the same tomorrow, it gives us a real chance to keep our unbeaten league run going."
