REPORT: Coventry City 1-0 Blackburn Rovers

Wright heads the Sky Blues to all three points...

4 October 2023

Haji Wright came off the bench to head the Sky Blues to all three points against Blackburn Rovers at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The striker was introduced in the 72nd minute and he headed the ball past Leopold Wahlstedt, after Yasin Ayari had seen his effort come back off the crossbar.

The win lifts the Sky Blues to 12th in the Championship, two points off the top six places.

The first attempt on goal came from an unlikely source when Luis Binks picked up the ball from outside of the area, forcing Leopold Wahlstedt into a smart stop down to his left.

It was another defender who looked to open the scoring moments after as Jay Dasilva looked for goal from distance, but his shot would go wide of goal.

At the other end, Ben Wilson produced a superb stop to push James Hill’s strike onto the crossbar and then Bobby Thomas cleared the ball off the line after the defender then looked to pick out Sammie Szmodics.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 Blackburn Rovers

After break, sections of the Coventry Building Society Arena thought City had taken the lead when Yasin Ayari’s ball across the box was met by Matty Godden, but his powerful effort cannoned back off the woodwork, before Blackburn were able to clear.

Blackburn thought they had taken the lead minutes later, when ball into the box was gathered by Ben Wilson and Andrew Moran kicked it out his hands into the back of the net, with the referee eventually ruling out the goal.

City hit the crossbar for the second time in the game and it was an Eccles corner met by Bobby Thomas and his volley came back off the woodwork.

Wilson was called into action again at the other end, standing up tall to save a Szmodics effort comfortably.

The breakthrough would finally come five minutes from time and it was substitute Haji Wright who grabbed his second of the season, after he was the quickest to react when Ayari’s strike came back off the crossbar with the striker heading the ball into the back of the net.
