INTERVIEW: Mark Robins reflects on defeat to West Brom

Defeat for City against the Baggies...

30 October 2023

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins reiterated the need for his players to keep working and to work through the recent run of results.

City fell to defeat against West Bromwich Albion, after goals either side of half-time wrapped up the points for the Baggies.

Speaking after the final whistle, Mark Robins gave his reaction to the defeat and also thanked the Sky Blue Army for their support in the game.

Looking back on the game and the last week…

“I think it's a feature of our games over the last few, the last few games obviously against Bristol City, Rotherham and then tonight, and we just get into a difficult pattern.

“But there's no other way out of it, then sticking together and look I'm experienced enough to know that this is what happens and sometimes if you're less experienced, you start to worry about things and honestly, it's not nice and certainly doesn't feel nice.

“So don't please anybody think that everything's great and I'm being flippant about anything because I know there's plenty of work to do, but I've known that all along, this is the process. That is what we talk about.

“We had plenty of the game. They started brightly, they put us under a lot of pressure at the start, which meant that they came running after us full of energy.

“We gave them a chance to score and that was the issue. We gave away the chance to score and those have been problems for us where we've given up opportunities and they've ended up in the back of our net which isn't a great habit at all, so that's got to stop.

“We've created really good chances. We've played our way in and we've moved the ball pretty well. The big thing for me is we need to take more opportunities to shoot, we've had opportunities to shoot and if you don't, you're not going to score anyway and that's the frustration and that's where the frustration builds.

“You have all the possession, but you have to do something with it and that's the confidence of the players. That's where they have to learn.

“They get frustrated with themselves about that. So, I've said to them to understand, there are areas that we've got to work out and be better in and we will, and they will get better, but not to get too down and heads up about things.

“They’re good players, they're going to be fine, we just need stick to it and keep working through it and that's the only way you can get through it.”

The support from the Sky Blue Army…

“The supporters were brilliant, I think we've had chances to score and then missed the chances and the fact that they've stuck behind them especially Haji who needs that.

“There's no doubt that he will have felt that support for him tonight which is absolutely perfect. so, thank you to the supporters for that.

“It is difficult, the support wants more and they will get better results and better performances and more to cheer about. We've just got to get through this little patch and not lose belief.”

Haji coming close to scoring…

“I thought he had scored the one where he's gone through, and he's got away from his man, and he's been marshalled pretty tightly.

“He had played as a lone striker at his previous club, and he can do that with his eyes closed, there's no doubt it and his movement in the first half was really good.

“I think if the first one goes in where he's got across the near post, but it is a difficult chance that anyway, and he's had another one where it's come to him, and he sort of leaning back but he just needs the one to go in for him.

“A few weeks ago, he scores the winner against Blackburn Rovers and everything's looking rosy. We were poor on the night in fairness, and they were better and better than us in possession on the night and we end up coming away with a one nil win and things will turn again. We've just done a little bit of a tricky week.”

The rebuild process from last season…

“It’s never nice to lose games and you're not in the game to lose games.

“The difficulty is always when you've had success that we've had over the last few years everybody expects it and expects it now and it is impossible to do. But I said that’s the reason that I stayed. That's the reason why we signed the contract.

“That's the reason we rebuilt, because we know what we're doing. It's going to take time. It really does.

“We've got good players here and good players that are technically very, very good. We've just got a little bit of a lack of confidence in certain areas, or lack of understanding maybe one or two. But that will come.”
