INTERVIEW: Mark Robins disappointed with Rotherham United defeat

25 October 2023

Mark Robins expressed his disappointment, after his side fell to a 2-0 defeat against Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.

Two second half goals condemned City to defeat, despite chances for the Sky Blues at the other end in front of goal.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins reflected on the result.

Thoughts on the game…

“I'm really disappointed. I don’t think we were good enough.

“In the first half we had loads of possession and we created some pretty good chances; their goalkeeper made a couple of really good saves actually, but we've got to bury the chances.

“If you don't do that, and then defend like we did in the second half, then you're going to come unstuck.

“They weren't a good side tonight. Let's have it right. They were there for the taking, especially in the first half.

“We needed to up it in the second half and for whatever reason, we just looked like they ran all over us and we conceded a really poor goal.”

The goals conceded…

“The first goal is always important at any level, this level particularly. We've had enough chances to go and win it and also get our noses in front and maybe put ourselves out of sight because if we take one of them, then you're on the front foot.

“We were on the backfoot, and we concede from a flicked header where for whatever reason, we've changed the setup in in the in the penalty area, which meant that there were people missing from the positions that they were supposed to be in, which is galling, to say the least because of the amount of work that goes on for those.

“We've got to be better there, and we have to be better on the ball. We came out second half and we were sloppy, so it made them interested, and it gave them the interest to get involved in the game.”

Disappointment with the result…

“We should have taken it away from them and that's the disappointment and I do talk about process, but that's not that process, that was just a poor game. It's a really disappointing game and from a position where we could have taken six points, we've taken none.

“The performance tonight wasn't good enough and we have to we have to be better than that. We will be better than that.

“Three games won this season out of the 13 games obviously isn't good enough and I know that and like I say we will be back to work and putting that right as soon as we possibly can.”

Performance levels…

“It's down to us to get the performance levels up as it was on Saturday. Tonight wasn't that good. First half was a little bit better but there's still we needed to offer an extra 10% and if you don't do that against a side like that then they get an interest in the game, they grow in confidence and after the first goal went in, playing on the counter attack seemed to suit them.”
