INTERVIEW: Ben Wilson talks key saves and looks back on a second win on the bounce

The goalkeeper helped the Sky Blues to three points...

4 October 2023

Ben Wilson praised his teammates after they picked up back-to-back wins in the Championship with a victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Ben was instrumental in helping City get over the line, producing a string of fine saves to keep out the Rovers attack.

That win also marked a third clean sheet of the season and speaking after the game, Wilson gave his thoughts and immediate reaction.

Reflecting on the win…

“We did brilliantly today, they are a really good footballing team but I think throughout the whole 90 minutes the lads were disciplined and each and every single one of them stuck to their job.

“I think we had enough chances overall to kill the game off. Obviously, they are very dangerous and can go score anytime. Luckily the boys were on point till the 98th minute. Fair play to the lads for sticking to their jobs and keeping my clean sheet for the first time in a while.

“At the end of the day, a 0-0 draw at home to Blackburn is not a bad result, but we will take the 1-0 all day.”

Back-to-back league wins…

“It is absolutely huge, and I think all season our performances have been there. We have just deserved more in most games.

“We have conceded a few late goals in the last few games, but everyone stuck to their jobs. Two back-to-back wins in the Championship is unbelievable.”

A third clean sheet…

“I thought they were never going to come! All these late goals so I’ve being thinking come on come on! It is going to happen eventually.

“Those 18 more is a massive target, but at this stage I think I have more clean sheets than last season so hopefully I can get 23.”

His save in the first half…

“I absolutely got a touch. He had all the time in the world, and he absolutely smashed it! I was like oh it is easy and plucked it out the sky. To be honest it was on top of me like that and my feet felt quite planted, I did not feel like I dived that much. I just stuck my hands out and got a little fingertip save.

“I think the fans saw it on the tele after because I got a nice little cheer It was well worth it!”

On Blackburn’s disallowed goal…

“He nearly chopped me in half hasn’t he! Should have been a sending off.

“The referee came over and said he was blinded so he could not see much, but luckily the linesmen were in a good position because I think he was trying to put me in the back of the net, never mind just the ball.”

Haji’s goal and performance…

I saw myself in Haji’s position and I nearly headed it in! I remembered that late winner last season!

“Full praise for Haji of course, we are doing it on a daily basis in training so fair play to him he got amongst it and got the goal. When he came on he was brilliant.”

On a reshuffled midfield following Kelly’s injury…

“Kells has been fantastic since he has come in. He will be a big miss. He is a big part of the changing room and a big part of every matchday.

“He is saying the injury is not too bad so hopefully he can recover beyond Saturday.”

Looking ahead to Norwich…

“We will go into that with full of confidence. They are obviously a good team and we have struggled in the past against them so it will be a challenge.”
