INTERVIEW: Ben Sheaf on Bristol City defeat and return from injury

21 October 2023

Ben Sheaf was delighted to be back out on in the pitch in Sky Blue, after returning from injury against Bristol City.

The midfielder started at Ashton Gate, after being on the sidelines for the last five weeks, following a groin injury.

However, it wasn’t the return Sheaf would’ve hoped for, as he revealed his disappointment that City were unable to come away from Bristol with anything.

Reflecting on the result…

“So hard to put into words really right now, after such dominance, especially in first half it was a really good performance and to not stick those chances away that we had.

“Then, obviously second half, we knew they were going to come out and be better than the first, but still saying that I think we dominated large parts of the second half as well, we still had a few chances.

“We've got to look at the positives. We come away from home and dominated the game really, and like I said, if we'd have put our chances away in that first half hour or so, you could be looking at being four or five nil up.

“So, in these games, the first goal is really important and we’ve just been punished by a disappointing set play in the end.”

Dominant performance…

“Yeah, it's pleasing the first half performance especially, and overall, it's a decent performance.

“But the three points is what matters but, we're still gelling together as a team a little bit and maybe that showed in some spells but like I said, we've got to look at the positives and what was a really decent away performance apart from the result.”

Looking for that goal…

“I think we hit the crossbar three times, which is obviously frustrating and I think, if we look at ourselves, we should probably stick those chances away but yeah, it just wasn't our day today.

When you have that many good chances and then they don’t seem to be getting in the back of the net we started to think is it going to be our day today.

“They scored, and we stuck at it and had a few chances in the second-half but you know, they threw their bodies on the line and fair play to them, but it’s disappointing result but decent performance.”

Trailing at the break…

“It’s really frustrating you're almost like what else can I do, it's hard to put into words but you know.

“Like I say take the positives and we got another tough one on Wednesday night against Rotherham, so it'll be a completely different game but, you know, we'll look at the good bits from today and then take that into Wednesday.”

His return to the team…

“I'm delighted to be back out on the pitch. I’ve been putting in some good work with the medical team and trying to get myself back as quick as possible.

Having that international break helped me sort of get a good block of work and then train with the lads this week. I'm feeling good. So, you’ve just got to recover well, and be ready for Wednesday.”

Start to the season…

“You look at it and you think, a lot of them draws we probably could have won in in those games. You know there's a lot of late goals that we conceded and yeah, but, we're still building and it’s still early on in the season.

“We're only a quarter the way through so it's there’s still a lot of improvement to do but I'm I feel like we're on the right track and just got to keep sticking together.”
