COMMUNITY: Dementia Active participants enjoy Sky Blues matchday!

27 October 2023

Sky Blues in the Community's Dementia Active project engages with 50+ participants & carers per week, and the project was fortunate enough to be offered 30 tickets to the Coventry City versus Norwich City game in the Coventry Building Society lounge.

Participants, carers & partners of the Dementia Active programme were invited to enjoy hospitality prior the game where they experienced food and beverages along with a guest appearance from Ben Sheaf who answered a few questions.

Everyone was then able to watch and support Coventry City from the stands before returning to the lounge to witness a post-match interview from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto; who was man of the match on the day.

Andy, a season ticket holder and who regularly attends Dementia Active, described the day as ‘the greatest day of his life’. Whilst many others showed appreciation to the accommodation and suitability provided by the Coventry Building Society lounge and its staff for those with reduced mobility and additional needs.

Emma Brodie, Senior Community Specialist – Better Connections, for the Coventry Building Society, who helped SBitC organise and accommodate the event for SBitC, commented:

‘It was a pleasure to welcome along the Dementia Active group to the Coventry Building Society Lounge. We also remembered our friend Ken Brown, with his family and friends from Arden Care Home. The Coventry Building Society lounge offers a comfortable space for guests to enjoy a matchday experience in a much calmer setting.  Everyone was having such a great day, which made it one of my favourite games of the season’

Dementia Active is a free service offered by Sky Blues in the Community which offers the opportunity for those with a dementia diagnosis or memory loss concerns to partake in regular physical activity. The programme offers sports such as badminton, tennis, football, table tennis, archery, basketball and much more for attendees & carers to partake in at their own intensity. Refreshments such as tea, coffee and biscuits are provided which help create a social element to the programme where people can chat, create friendships, and play board/card games.
