ACADEMY: Coventry City U18s bounce back with win over Sheffield Wednesday

Mark Delaney says he is proud of his young Sky Blues players...

Coventry City Under-18s secured a much-needed victory on Saturday afternoon as they battled to a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Mark Delaney's young Sky Blues side had failed to win in their last four outings in the U18s Professional Development League, despite dominating in games against tough opposition.

But goals from Charlie Burden-Whittleton and Charlie Finney have ended that disappointing spell and offered the Club's future stars a chance to start a fresh run of victories.

"I was really pleased for the boys. They have had a tough spell with some tough games in which they haven't picked up the results they would have liked," explained Delaney.

"On the whole, performances have been good during that spell. Last week's result was disappointing and so too was the performance, so we had a good chat after that one and a good week of training, and the boys put on a strong performance this time around.

"Against Sheffield Wednesday, they put a good performance onto the pitch and came out the end of it deserving the result."

City started the game on top and took a much-deserved early lead through Burden-Whittleton. From then on, Delaney tasked his young side with being compact and organised as they attempted to stop Sheffield Wednesday from fighting back from behind.

Coventry came close to finding a second-half goal that would have killed the game - but Sheffield Wednesday snatched a leveller moments later, tasking City's youngster with a new challenge:

"In weeks gone by we have failed to react well to being pegged back, especially in games where we have been so dominant, but this time we reacted really well," explained a pleased Delaney.

"We managed to get our second goal through Charlie Finney and from that point on we controlled the game really well.

"The boys know that they need to take their chances and not give too much away. I was really pleased with them and it has given us something to build on.

"We've had some tough games, I've got to say that, since I've come in. We've put in some good performances but not always gotten what we deserve," added Delaney.

"Next up we have another tough game against Hull City, who are going really well, but it is a good chance for us to see where we are at.

"Off the back of Saturday's result, we are looking to build on it!"
