REPORT: Under-21s run riot against Crewe Alexandra

27 November 2023

The Sky Blues Under-21s beat Crewe Alexandra 6-1 in the Professional Development League at Alexandra Park.

Chances were few and far between in the opening 20 minutes of the game, with neither side able to create a clear cut chance to test either ‘keeper.

However, it would be the Sky Blues who would test the Crewe ‘keeper first and it ultimately led to the games first goal.

City worked their way into the hosts box, with Marco Rus seeing his shot saved, only for it to be parried into the path of Aidan Dausch and he found the back of the net.

The lead was doubled ten minutes before the break, as City cut through the Railwaymen defence. Elliot Betjemann picked out the run of Bradley Stretton and he made no mistake, sliding the ball past the ‘keeper to make it 2-0.

The hosts hit the crossbar with the last attempt of the half.

HALF-TIME: Crewe Alexandra 0-2 Sky Blues

City started the second half on the front foot once more, as they introduced Justin Obikwu, with the striker replacing Bradley Stretton.

The striker marked his return to action with the games third goal, working his way into the box to get on the end of a Jayden Smith cross to fire home.

Obikwu was making his mark on the game, rising highest in the box to head home an Elliot Betjemann corner and put the Sky Blues out of sight.

There was a chance to add a fifth ten minutes from time, but Jayden Smiths shot from distance was well saved.

Crewe pulled one back before the final whistle with a well struck effort from distance.

However, there was still time for City to regain their four goal lead and they did through substitute Rylie Siddall, who found the bottom corner from just inside the area.

When the game looked finished, City ran straight back up the other end and added a sixth, to cap off a memorable performance, this time it was Kai Andrews who found the net.
