REPORT: Sky Blues Under-21s progress in Birmingham Senior Cup after penalty shootout win against Studley

Trialist 'keeper saves the deciding penalty...

24 November 2023

The Sky Blues progressed into the Third Round of the Birmingham Senior Cup, with a penalty shootout victory over Studley at the Beehive Arena.

The first shot on target of the game fell to the Sky Blues and it was Aidan Dausch, who was fresh off two goals for the Under-21s last time out against Sheffield United, who beat his man before forcing Brendon Bunn into a smart stop at his near post.

City worked their way in down the right-hand-side, with Rylie Siddall, who was introduced for the injured Bradley Stretton, sliding the ball through for Jayden Smith, but his near post shot was stopped by Bunn.

The best chance of the half fell to the Sky Blue captain Marco Rus, and right on the stroke of the whistle, the midfielder ran onto a ball in the box, but couldn’t direct his strike on target.

HALF-TIME: Studley 0-0 Sky Blues

The hosts had their first attempt at goal after the break. Romario Martin produced a strike from the edge of the area, but the City Trialist saved well.

Studley would be left to rue that missed chance as John Dempster’s side took the lead through Siddall. A ball into the box fell to Evan Eghosa and his shot was initially saved by Bunn, but he pushed the ball into the path of Siddall and he found the back of the net from close range.

City controlled the game from then on, but they dealt a cruel blow when a deflected strike from range by Zac Guinan beat the Trialist ‘keeper and drew Studley level.

A strike from distance by Dermi Lusala was the last piece of action from the game, as the outcome of the match was to be decided by a penalty shootout.
