Three points on the road for the Sky Blues...

25 November 2023

City ran riot in the capital, as they hit Millwall for three at The Den in Sky Bet Championship action.

Matty Godden opened the scoring midway through the first half and then second half strikes from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ben Sheaf wrapped up the points.

The Sky Blues make it back-to-back clean sheets, as they got back to winning ways.

The games first opportunity fell to the Sky Blues and it was a break from the back which saw Josh Eccles play a superb ball through for Haji Wright, by the USA international, who raced through on goal, saw his strike saved well by the outstretched hand of Bartosz Bialkowski.

A Millwall corner was the avenue for City’s next chance. This time Brad Collins collected and started the move off, with Milan van Ewijk picking out Jamie Allen at the back post, but his volley went narrowly over the bar.

The hosts came the closest to opening the scoring and it was George Honeyman with a cross to the back post, which came back off the woodwork.

Former City loanee Brooke Norton-Cuffy then found space down the right and cut inside to get a shot away, but he dragged his effort wide of goal.

The Sky Blues took the lead on the half hour mark, and it was a 7th of the season for Matty Godden, as he reacted quickest to head home after Wright had saw his initial shot saved.

Moments before the break, Norton-Cuffy picked out Zian Flemming in the box, but he couldn’t direct his header on target, and it sailed over the bar.

At the other end and it was Sakamoto who twisted and turned, picking out van Ewijk, who teed up Eccles on the edge of the area, and he forced Bialkowski into a fine stop down to his left.

There was time for one more chance and a moment for Brad Collins to produce a fine stop, keeping out Flemming’s deflected strike from inside of the area.

HALF-TIME: Millwall 0-1 Sky Blues

The second half started with the Sky Blues in control, passing the ball around, as they looked to create an opening to add to their tally.

It would be at the other end where the first two attempts of the second half would fall, both shots from range which didn’t trouble Collins in goal, as Casper De Norre and George Saville both blazed wide.

Millwall would be left to rue those missed chances as the Sky Blues doubled their lead and it was a first for the Club for Tatsuhiro Sakamoto. The Japan international was the first to react when Jamie Allen forced the Lions ‘keeper into a stunning stop, but Tatsu fired in from close range.

The Sky Blues could have a third with five minutes remaining, but Haji Wright’s low driven strike was well saved by the Millwall shot-stopper.

Bialkowski denied Wright, tipping the ball behind for a corner and it was from that set-piece that City added a third and it was Ben Sheaf on the stretch at the back post to make it 3-0.
