INTERVIEW: Mark Delaney looks back at defeat for Under-18s against Wigan Athletic

City fell to a 3-0 defeat against Wigan...

Mark Delaney reiterated the hard work going in on the training ground as City’s youngsters look to continue their development.

This past weekend, despite a positive start to the game, in what was a close fought contest, the Under-18s fell to a 3-0 defeat to the Latics.

City were undone at two set-pieces, a familiar tale of games in recent weeks for Delaney’s young group.

Looking back at the game, the Under-18s coach gave a reflection on the game, as well as a recent international call-up for goalkeeper Luis Lines.

Reflecting on the game…

“We always knew it was going to be a tough game, going to Wigan away. We were expecting a difficult game.

“We spoke beforehand about starting well and we did that in the opening 15 minutes, and we created some chances and played on the front foot.

“However, we didn’t defend well from a cross, and they got their noses in front.

“From then on, we battled away for the remainder of the first half, but we never created much after that and it was quite even.

“We then went into the break and spoke at half-time about starting the second half on the front foot again and tried and get that goal back to get level.

“I think if we had done that then we would have gone on to get something from the day, because we were well in the game.

“Unfortunately, we gave away another corner which we conceded from and then another free-kick which we conceded another from.

“So that’s two set-pieces we’ve conceded from and they’re not the first two we’ve conceded from in recent weeks, so that’s something we need to work harder on to not give goals away.”

Putting the hours in the training ground to improve…

“We’re working hard every day, and the boys are working hard with me and Matt Whitehouse and we can’t fault them for that.

“But we also know we need to work harder to make sure we don’t give set-piece goals away and give teams a foot hold in the game.

“When you give goals away it changes the game and that’s something we need to work on.

“We’re a young team, as are the Under-21s, so at the moment we’re trying to develop them and make them better and hopefully come the end of the season we will see an improvement.”

Luis Lines being called-up for international duty with Wales Under-17s…

“Fantastic. He represents the academy really well and it just shows the quality and young talent we have here at Coventry City.

“We’re really proud of Luis and he isn’t the only one, in the past we’ve had Kai Andrews picking up international appearances, so we have quite a few and we’re represented really well.”
