INTERVIEW: Haji Wright talks fifth goal of the season and Plymouth win

28 November 2023

Haji Wright shares his thoughts following his winner to hand City the three points at home to Plymouth Argyle.

After an excellent move down the right-hand side by Milan van Ewijk, the striker was ready to slam home from close range.

The striker looked back on the result and his fifth goal of the season for the Sky Blues.

On the three points and how the game was won…

“Happy for the three points, happy to contribute for my team and we are going to keep building from here.

“Us going forward, we were not as clinical as we would have wanted to be but, in the end, we got the goal and the three points.

“I think it was the small margins and those went our way. We battled throughout the whole 90 minutes, and we did not really give them much offensively.”

Whether the ball went out of play prior to his winner…

“I could not tell from my perspective; I thought it was in but it is not my job to referee the game.”

Chances in the second half…

“I had a few difficult ones. I am happy to finally take the chance in the end but hopefully in the future I will be able to take more of them.”

On the support he receives…

“It gives me confidence. They are supporting me always whether it is a good time or bad one. It gives me energy to keep going and keep trying.”

Whether this could be a turning point in the season…

“Hopefully but you never know, of course it is a long season so there will be plenty of ups and downs. Hopefully we can keep up the momentum and grab a lot more points.”

Three clean sheets in a row…

“I like to contribute defensively and I think we all play fifty-fifty, both sides of the ball so I think that helps us gets points in games like today. Hopefully we can continue this momentum into the Ipswich match.”

On whether he sets himself goal targets and whether he is where he expected to be at this time…

“Of course! I cannot tell you guys now what it will be but I am hoping to reach my goal.

“No, I just gave myself a general target to hit towards the end of the season and I do not really care at what point I reach it as long as I eventually reach it.”

His wider role and if he prefers it…

“More of like a secondary striker role for me now. It is something I have done before and is something I am familiar with so I feel comfortable there.

“I am kind of in-between positions now, I feel like they are both kind of similar positions in a lot of ways, either way for me it does not really make a difference.”
