Nothing to separate the two sides in the first leg...

14 May 2023

The Sky Blues and Middlesbrough played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their play-off semi-final.

Neither side were able to break the deadlock at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with Chuba Akpom coming closest for the visitors and Liam Kelly for the Sky Blues.

The first opportunity of the game fell to the visitors and to striker Chuba Akpom. The Boro man was slid through on goal and he was denied the opening goal by a splendid save from Ben Wilson, who tipped his effort onto the bar.

Ryan Giles picked out teammate Paddy McNair from a corner a few moments later, but the centre-half couldn’t steer his header on target.

At the other end, Jake Bidwell whipped a corner into the box and he picked out Liam Kelly at the back post, but the captain’s header was wide of goal.

The City skipper was involved minutes later, seeing his shot blocked, before the ball eventually fell to Gustavo Hamer on the half-volley, but his effort went wide.

Wilson was called into action just after the half-hour mark, preventing Isaiah Jones from sneaking the ball in at the near post.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 Middlesbrough

After the break, the first chance of the second 45 minutes came to Akpom, getting on the end of a Giles ball into the box, but his header went wide.

City were enjoying a spell of possession in the Middlesbrough half and they went close when Callum Doyle beat his man outside of the area, but his shot ended up sailing over the bar.

Hamer was next to try his luck from distance, but he couldn’t find the target, dragging his shot wide of the left-hand post.

Both sides battled to take an advantage into the second leg at the Riverside, but ultimately there was nothing to separate the two sides heading into Wednesday night.
