The Sky Blues are heading to Wembley...

17 May 2023

The Sky Blues have booked their place in the SkyBet Championship Play-Off Final as Gustavo Hamer's goal secured a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

The first-half was a cagey affair, with neither side getting a clear look-in on goal.

City took the lead soon before the hour mark with a well manufactured trio move between Sheaf, Gyökeres, and finished by Hamer gave City a foot up.

Mark Robins' side withstood an enormous Boro push, attack after attack, but fought tremendously to secure a trip to Wembley to play in the Championship Play-Off Final.

Viktor Gyökeres was nearly presented an early gift as he charged down a misplaced Boro back pass, but Zack Steffen spread himself well to prevent the Swede.

Boro threatened in the opening stages and used the home support to their advantage but City remained resilient and looked to counter with a well-worked press, both sides unable to find the go-ahead goal, however.

Riley McGree had the hosts first real sight on goal, striking from range, only to be deflected out for a corner.

The Sky Blues had another break fall to them as Gyökeres and Gustavo Hamer combined from Ben Wilson’s goal kick with the ball falling to Jamie Allen, but the midfielder couldn’t get the ball under his spell.

Boro pushed to snap the deadlock before the half-time whistle but a couple of vital blocks by Jake Bidwell and Kyle McFadzean ensured the game remained goalless at the break.

HALF-TIME: Middlesbrough 0-0 Sky Blues

Ben Sheaf pinched possession and Gyökeres returned the ball to him through on goal, but neither Sheaf or Allen were able to get any purchase on their strike as Boro cleared their lines.

The Sky Blues press proved to be too much for the hosts as they stole the ball, once again, followed by a phenomenal pass from Sheaf to Gyökeres. The Swede evaded Steffen’s charge, dinking the ball over his head where Hamer collected the ball, jinked past his man and dispatched into the roof of the net for the lead.

Hamer nearly added his second of the game with sublime free-kick effort, but his effort crashed off the crossbar with Steffen rooted.

Boro responded with a triple change and a dangerous free-kick own their own which popped to McGree but another block by Luke McNally kept City’s clean sheet in tact.

Gyökeres came close down one end and Wilson saved at the other, but as the final whistle sounded, Hamer's goal was the decisive one as the Sky Blues booked their place in the Play-Off final.
