PREVIEW: City head to Boro on the final day

The Sky Blues face Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough...

7 May 2023

The Sky Blues travel to the Riverside Stadium for their final Championship fixture of the 2022/23 season.

Meet Middlesbrough:

Having secured their place in the play-offs a few weeks ago, Middlesbrough have been preparing for the semi-finals over the last few fixtures.

Boro fell short in their pursuit of an automatic promotion place, Michael Carrick’s side were forced to settle for 4th in the Championship, with that place confirmed last weekend.

Carrick’s arrival at the Riverside prompted an upturn in fortune, which saw Boro climb the table, with Chuba Akpom leading the line in the scoring charts.

Aston Villa duo Cameron Archer and Aaron Ramsey joined in January and helped keep momentum going, that had been built up following the international break.

Thoughts of Mark Robins:

“They’re a good side and they have good movement with good players and intelligence, and they have a way of playing.

“They have a strong squad, and they might have some illness and injuries, as everyone has, so you don’t know how they’re going to go, but we have to just get on with what we have to do and see where it takes us.

“You can never predict accurately. We know where we want to go and they know what they want to do, but it’s just about the day.

“It’s about performance all the time. If you look at outcomes, you’re in trouble, you have a process and a method and you have to try and execute it, that doesn’t change, it’s what we’ve always done.”

Middlesbrough’s last six:

  • Rotherham 1-0 Middlesbrough
  • Luton 2-1 Middlesbrough
  • Middlesbrough 3-1 Hull
  • Middlesbrough 5-1 Norwich
  • Bristol City 2-2 Middlesbrough
  • Middlesbrough 1-2 Burnley

Sky Blues' last six:

  • Sky Blues 2-1 Reading
  • Blackburn Rovers 1-1 Sky Blues
  • QPR 0-3 Sky Blues
  • Sky Blues 2-2 Watford
  • Swansea City 0-0 Sky Blues

Historic head-to-head:

Draws - 15

Match Officials:

The EFL have confirmed that John Busby will act as referee for The Sky Blues' clash with Middlesbrough on the final day of the season.

Busby, from Oxfordshire, last took charge of a Sky Blues fixture, back in April, when he oversaw the 0-0 draw with Swansea City.

So far this season, Busby has taken charge of 31 fixtures across the Championship, League One, League Two and EFL Cup, awarding 122 yellow cards and four red cards.

He will be assisted by Mark Dwyer and Matthew McGrath, with Marc Edwards acting as his fourth official.
