INTERVIEW: Mark Robins talks Middlesbrough, final day outcomes and Sheaf fitness

City head to the Riverside on Monday...

5 May 2023

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins is ‘proud’ of his players, as they enter the final day of the season looking to secure a place in the play-offs.

City sit 5th in the Championship heading into Monday’s fixture with Middlesbrough, knowing a point, or results elsewhere could see them finish in the top six.

After a season which began in unprecedented circumstances, to be where the Sky Blues are now, Robins told how he is proud of what his players have achieved so far.

The City boss also previewed Monday’s trip to the Riverside, as well as providing the latest fitness update on midfielder Ben Sheaf…

Proud of his players…

“Regardless of the outcome, everyone should be proud of what we’ve achieved and that’s the biggest compliment that anyone can have at a football club.

“We talk about rising together and the togetherness of everybody, it makes you stronger collectively and that’s been true for us.”

The opportunity that awaits…

“There is a chance we get a point and we get into the play-offs and then potentially we’re three games away from a return to the Premier League, but we have a big game first on Monday.

“It’s not one we fear, it’s on we’re really looking forward to. They’re (Middlesbrough) a really good team and there are a lot of variables around it, but ultimately, it’s about us and what we do on the day.

“The excitement is there and you can feel it, you could feel it in the stadium last week and that gives you the energy for this week and moving into the game on Monday.”

Coming up against Middlesbrough…

“They’re a good side and they have good movement with good players and intelligence, and they have a way of playing.

“They have a strong squad, and they might have some illness and injuries, as everyone has, so you don’t know how they’re going to go, but we have to just get on with what we have to do and see where it takes us.

“You can never predict accurately. We know where we want to go and they know what they want to do, but it’s just about the day.

“It’s about performance all the time. If you look at outcomes, you’re in trouble, you have a process and a method and you have to try and execute it, that doesn’t change, it’s what we’ve always done.”

Update on Sheaf…

“Ben Sheaf is making good progress. Who knows when he could come back, there’s potential in anything, but it’s positive.”

How the squad are…

“They’re fine. We get on with working and that’s what we’re doing. It’s the last game of the season that we want to perform well in and what comes after it we will see.

“We put all our energy into preparations for this game and we’re not looking past it. We know how difficult it is. Middlesbrough is probably the toughest place we could go.

“It’s a great time to be part of Coventry City and we have to embrace it, but whatever happens, there’s loads of learning.”
