INTERVIEW: Mark Robins on Play-Off Semi-Final win and new long-term deal

Sky Blues book their place in SkyBet Championship Play-Off Final...

17 May 2023

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins commended his players as his side booked their place in the SkyBet Championship Play-Off Final and spoke on his new long-term deal after City's 1-0 win against Middlesbrough and the Riverside Stadium.

In what was a tense game, Gustavo Hamer's moment of brilliance on the hour mark secured the Sky Blues' place in the Play-Off final.

Talking to the media after the game, Robins spoke:

On reaching the Play-Off Final...

“Wow. That was the longest two hours of my life.

“It was unbelievable the effort they’ve put in and the quality they’ve shown against a really top opponent is incredible.

“To get to a third Wembley final in the six years since I’ve come back in is just incredible.

"The work that has gone into tonight is phenomenal and we got our reward, but we’ve got to go to Wembley and win it.

“The noise inside the stadium was phenomenal but it was our support we heard at the end, it was an incredible evening.

“It’s totally deserved and an incredible evening.”

On the Sky Blues missed chances and Gustavo Hamer’s goal…

“It’s an incredible goal, Viktor [Gyökeres] has gone through, and he could’ve had a couple of goals tonight, he ran his socks off.

“The first one in the first few minutes he runs onto it and the keeper has just got a hand on it, there’s one in the second half where he could’ve got in again but they’ve marshaled him really well over the three games.

“But Gus [Hamer] was there to pick up the slack and he’s got an instinct.

“He’s got inside and picked it up and done the rest, and that is a difficult skill but he does it every day in training, so it’s no surprise that he picked it up and put it in the top corner and that gave us a breather.”

On the performance against Boro…

“We had enough of the ball and when we played, we started to get confidence and cause them problems which made them drop.

“The amount of attacking players they’ve got on the pitch meant they didn’t want to defend.

“They had the ball in the back of the net but it was offside, they’ve thrown everything at us and we’ve withstood everything they did.

“They had people in positions to hurt us but the way we defended to keep a clean sheet over the two legs of the semi-final is phenomenal.

“They had the ball in the back of the net but it was offside, they’ve thrown everything at us and we’ve withstood everything they did.

“Ben Sheaf ran out of steam, Jamie Allen ran out of steam but the quality of Josh Eccles, who’s come to the fore, and Matty Godden and Fankaty [Dabo] bringing some energy helped us breakaway because Brooke [Norton-Cuffy] had started to labour.”

On preparation for the final against Luton…

“We need to get a breather now and re-group to be ready for this final.

“We’ll have a nice drink tonight, we won’t get back until the early hours of the morning.

“I think Adi [Viveash] is telling everybody they’re not going home tonight, so I’ll have to let my missus know, but we’ve got to enjoy this little bit before the prep starts for Wembley.

“It’s a game for the romantics, the journey of where us and Luton have both come from, I remember them with a 30-point deduction.

“It’s been a tough road for them but a tough road for us and we’ve got our own tails of woe from years gone by, so we’re going to have a really good go at getting back into the Premier League, we’ve got one game to go

“We’ll work hard but it’s going to be a hell of a game.

On signing a long-term deal with the Sky Blues…

“I hope there is more to come.

“Doug [King] has moved really quick to offer me those terms and I’ve gladly accepted.

“It’s a brilliant place and a great fit for me, when you see nights like tonight, I hope there’s many more to come.”
