INTERVIEW: Mark Robins looks ahead to Middlesbrough second leg

The manager previews trip to Riverside...

16 May 2023

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins says his side are ‘ready’ for tomorrow’s play-off second leg against Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

City and Boro come up against one another the third time in the space of ten days, as they battle for a place in the play-off final.

Playing Middlesbrough three times in the space of a week…

“There aren’t too many occasions where it happens. In my managerial career I’ve done it once where we played Ipswich in the cup and then a replay and a league game.

“It is one of those quirks of fate and it doesn’t make too much difference really because we know the quality, they have in the games we’ve played, and we know they have a strong squad.

“We have to go up there and just really look forward to it.”

The Sky Blue Army…

“The supporters have backed us through thin and thin and I’ve said it before, they’ve been phenomenal.

“They will be there again, albeit in a smaller number than they would have wanted, but they will still be heard.”

The players ready for tomorrow…

“They’re ready. There’s nothing more we can do in terms of preparation on the grass.

“The biggest thing for me is recovery and the energy levels getting back up to where they need to be.

“There’s always stuff you can do, don’t get me wrong I’m not being flippant about anything, they will get the information they need.

“There’s nothing more than that, that they need. A lot of the work is already done, and they understand it.”

Potential of practicing penalties…

“Not yet. That’s part of our process, we may do some of that today. There are important bits leading up to it.

“It’s a relevant part but I think the process had to be longer, you can’t do it over night. The ones that are ready will take one and we know who they could be.

“What you try and avoid is people putting their hands up and having an ad-hoc situation. That will all be sorted out beforehand.

“You can’t replicate it, but players have been in situations of penalty shoot-outs before, but it’s an individual process for them.”
