INTERVIEW: John Dempster reflects on Stourbridge defeat

12 May 2023

Sky Blues Under-21s Head Coach John Dempster was proud of his side after they finally exited the Birmingham Senior Cup at the final hurdle.

City suffered defeat in the final to Stourbridge after coming out the wrong side of a penalty shoot-out at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The defeat brings the curtain down on City’s 2022/23 season, in what proved to be a successful year in terms of developing the group further.

Reflecting on defeat against Stourbridge, Dempster acknowledged the performance of City’s opponents and gave credit to them.

Reflecting on defeat…

“Not the result we wanted but I’m very proud of the performance, I thought Stourbridge were the better team over the 90 minutes and the lads gave everything to get to 90 minutes and penalties.

“Some of the opportunities Stourbridge had, Luke Bell made some brilliant save to keep them out and some unbelievable blocks by everyone.

“When it got to penalties I was pleased because we rode our luck at time, when you analyse the penalties, they’ve took some really good ones and ours weren’t so good.

“Sometimes on the night you have to take your hat off to the opposition and say they deserved to lift the cup.

“They’ve knocked out Wolves and West Brom to get here and now they’ve beat us so fair play to them.”

Looking back at the journey…

“We gave everything btu at times our quality was lacking.

“The journey to get here we’ve had ups and downs. We’ve had to play different formations against teams with different styles against Non-League sides and we’ve been excellent throughout but we’ve fell short at the final hurdle, but it wasn’t for the want of trying.”

The season overall…

“Since Christmas at the CBS and in the league we’ve been excellent and performed well away from home.

“To a man the boys have been brilliant, the younger ones have stepped in and the older lads who some of them are now leaving us, they’re going on the next part of their journey so a big thank you from me to them for their efforts over the time they’ve been here, they’ve been a pleasure to work with.”
